4 Metro athletes honored at King luncheon

Nick Connolly of Marion High School, Dalvin Dixon of Kennedy, Raven Johnson of Jefferson and Spencer Zielke of Cedar Valley Christian are among 22 area middle and high school students who will be honored at the 27th Annual Remembering Martin Luncheon on Monday at the Hotel at Kirkwood.

All four of the Metro students are seniors.

One student from each Cedar Rapids high school and middle school was nominated for the honor by school administrators for exemplifying the ideals and values of Martin Luther King Jr., including leadership and service to the community.

Adenhart scholarship application deadline

Applications are being accepted through the Kernels Foundation for the 2013 Nick Adenhart Memorial Scholarship.

Nick Adenhart was a bright young pitcher who played for the Cedar Rapids Kernels in 2006, and was a rising star in the Los Angeles Angels organization.  Only hours after Nick’s 2009 season debut on the mound for the Angels, a drunk driver tragically killed him on April 9, 2009 at age 22.

Nick’s family would like to honor him by awarding a $1,000 scholarship in his memory.  The Kernels Foundation is privileged to administer the scholarship on behalf of Nick’s family.

Kernels banquet draws record crowd with Twins

It looks like the Cedar Rapids Kernels have hit a grand-slam by joining forces with the Minnesota Twins this season.

A record crowd of more than 500 baseball fans attended the 17th Annual Hot Stove Banquet at the Cedar Rapids Marriott Thursday night to mingle with Twins Manager Ron Gardenhire and members of the Twins Winter Caravan.

Several dozen fans were dressed in Twins attire and many others identified themselves as Minnesota fans, delighted the Kernels are the new Class A affiliate of the Twins in the Midwest League.

Sweeney gets batting tips from Rod Carew

Ryan Sweeney will return to Cedar Rapids Wednesday with a new approach to hitting, thanks to Hall of Famer Rod Carew.

He also could return with a new Major League team.

Sweeney, 27, has spent more than a week in California with Carew, working on his approach to hitting and tinkering with his swing.

Boys basketball pods announced

The Metro area could end up with as many as five or as few as zero teams in the boys state basketball tournament in March.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association released its pods for Class 4A and 3A on Monday. The six Class 4A teams were spread among three substates.

Kennedy and Washington were sent to Substate #3, Linn-Mar and Xavier to Substate #4, and Jefferson and Prairie to Substate #6. Marion competes in Class 3A and Cedar Valley Christian in Class 1A.

The road is rough for all eight Metro teams.
