Hembera leads Metro girls in scoring

The leading scorer among all the girls basketball players in the Metro area does not play for one of the big Mississippi Valley Conference schools.

In fact, she plays for one of the smallest schools in the state.

Shelby Hembera, a slender 6-foot sophomore, leads the Metro in scoring at the holiday break with a 19.7 average for Cedar Valley Christian.

Hembera ranks second in Class 1A in scoring and is seventh overall in the state, according to the IGHSAU.

Olson leads Metro and MVC in scoring

Jacob Olson scored a total of 28 points for the Cedar Rapids Jefferson boys basketball team last season and averaged just 1.4 per game.

He scored more points than that in a single outing last week when he poured in 31 markers in a victory over Cedar Rapids Washington.

Olson, a 5-foot-10 junior, leads all Metro players in scoring this season and also leads the entire Mississippi Valley Conference at a healthy 18.6 points per outing at the holiday break, according to the IHSAA.

Sweeney confident he'll find new team

Ryan Sweeney is unemployed for the first time since he signed his first pro baseball contract as an 18-year-old kid in 2003.

The Red Sox cut him loose on Nov. 30 after one injury-plagued season in Boston and now he's a free agent, hopeful of finding a new club for 2013.

Several teams have expressed interest in the 6-foot-4, 225-pound outfielder from Cedar Rapids, but right now it's a waiting game to see what develops.

5 Seasons wrestling meet features top teams

The 2012 Five Seasons Wrestling Dual Team Tournament will feature many of the top teams in Iowa Saturday.

Seven of the 16 teams in the tournament are currently ranked by The Predicament.

The Class 3A teams in the field include No. 2 Linn-Mar, No. 3 Bettendorf, No. 5 Prairie and No. 6 Iowa City West. The premier Class 2A teams include No. 1 West Delaware and No. 10 Charles City. Alburnett, which is ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, also will compete.

The tournament will begin at 9:30 a.m. with eight teams wrestling at Kennedy and eight teams wrestling at Washington. The championship match and third-place match are scheduled for Kennedy at 4 p.m.

Schulte family tops all-Metro football

Xavier quarterback Reggie Schulte was named the Player of the Year on the 2012 All-Metro Football Team on Monday.

Xavier Coach Duane Schulte, who is Reggie's father, was named the Metro Coach of the Year along with his assistant coaches with the Saints.

The Schultes helped Xavier compile a 13-1 record this season and reach the championship game of the Class 4A playoffs.
