Good news for Atwater on football injury

Mark Atwater walked out of St. Luke's Hospital at 6:30 Saturday night on his own, less than four hours after being the victim of a frightening hit during Coe's football game at Clark Field.

Atwater suffered a sprained neck and possible concussion, but was treated and released Saturday and spent Saturday night at home.

"Mark is doing OK now," Larry Atwater, his father and one of Coe's assistant coaches, said Sunday afternoon. "There was nothing broken, thank goodness, or anything like that."

Mark Atwater hurt in Coe football game

Former Linn-Mar star Mark Atwater was injured during Coe's home football game at Clark Field Saturday afternoon and taken to St. Luke's Hospital for treatment.

Atwater was hurt on a running play in the third quarter when he was tackled near his neck and head while trying for extra yards and a first down.

He lay motionless on the ground while Dr. Dustin Arnold and Coe trainers examined him. He was removed from the field on a stretcher and transported by ambulance to St. Luke's.

Larry Atwater, Mark's father and a Coe assistant coach, said the initial diagnosis was a sprained neck and concussion. Atwater, Coe's No. 2 quarterback, was able to move all his extremities while being examined and remained conscious.
