Metro players enjoy new Dynasty Hoops

CORALVILLE - High school basketball players from all over Eastern Iowa got up Sunday morning and drove to a grade school in Coralville to play a game before a few dozen folks.

They were happy to do it.

First of all, this wasn't a small grade-school gym with a hopscotch pad on a slippery floor. This was a first-class basketball court at the brand new $11.5 million Norman Borlaug Elementary School in Coralville.

Second of all, these weren't just a bunch of ordinary high school players. Some of the top players from the Mississippi Valley Conference were there, including 14 from the Metro area of Cedar Rapids and Marion.

Prep football prevues - Sept. 14

A rematch of one of the most exciting football games of a year ago is the highlight for this Friday night.

Linn-Mar had thrashed Washington during the regular season, 56-7, but put its No. 2 ranking on the line against the Warriors in the second round of the playoffs at Linn-Mar.

The Lions held a 12-point lead with six minutes to play when the Warriors caught fire, eventually winning the game on a touchdown pass with 9 seconds left to play.

The teams meet again at Linn-Mar Stadium. Both graduated large numbers and are struggling in the early going of this season.

Dukes brings 'Sunday Morning Quarterback' to KGYM

Mark Dukes believed strongly in the old-fashioned values of being fair, balanced and well-informed during his distinguished newspaper career at The Gazette.

He brings those same qualities to his radio work at KGYM, but now he has the freedom to inject his own opinions into the conversation. He's not reluctant to express a thought, but he's not on the air to be highly critical or call for a coach to be fired.

"There are others out there on 'shock' radio or 'shock' TV that do that and that's how they get ratings, but that's not me," he said. "It's going to be reasoned criticism for me. That's who I am.
