J-Hawks, Hawks, Cougars get No. 1 seeds

The Jefferson J-Hawks, Prairie Hawks and Kennedy Cougars have drawn No. 1 seeds for the Class 4A substate baseball tournament that begins Friday, July 17 and need to win only two games to reach the state tournament.

Jefferson drew the No. 1 seed in Substate 4 and will host No. 6 seed North Scott in the opening round. Prairie is the No. 1 seed in Substate 6 and will host Washington in the opening round. Kennedy is the top seed in Substate 3 and will host Waterloo East in the opener.

Linn-Mar drew the No. 2 seed in Substate 3 and could face Kennedy in the substate finals. The Lions host Waterloo West in their substate opener.

There are eight substate tournaments with six teams apiece. All six teams in each substate will play an opening-round game. The highest remaining seed will get a bye in the second round and head straight to the substate finals.

J-Hawks stay No. 2 in baseball poll

The Jefferson J-Hawks remained in the No. 2 spot in the Class 4A baseball rankings Monday by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Prairie is ranked No. 5, Kennedy is No. 8 and Linn-Mar is No. 9 with no changes from last week.

Waukee is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A.

Schebler placed on 7-Day DL

Scott Schebler, an outfielder with the Oklahoma City Dodgers in the Pacific Coast League, has been played on the 7-Day Disabled List with an injury to his right hamstring.

Schebler, a Cedar Rapids Prairie grad, played for Oklahoma City on Friday. His stint on the DL is retroactive to Saturday, July 4. The injury is not believed to be serious, according to a spokesman for Oklahoma City.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (CR Prairie), Oklahoma City, OF, Triple-A, Pacific Coast League (Dodgers): Schebler is hitting .243 with 10 homers and 30 RBIs.

CHAD CHRISTENSEN (CR Washington), Fort Myers, OF, High-A, Florida State League (Twins): Christensen did not play Monday in a 9-0 victory over St. Lucie. He is hitting .264 with two homers and 27 RBIs.

JON KELLER (CR Xavier), Frederick, P, High-A, Carolina League (Orioles): Keller did not pitch Monday in a 3-1 victory over Winston-Salem. He has a 3-4 record, 4.05 ERA and three saves.

MITCH KELLER (CR Xavier), Bristol, P, Rookie, Appalachian League (Pirates): Keller did not pitch in Bristol's doubleheader split with Johnson City Monday. He has not appeared in any of Bristol's 11 games due to soreness in his right arm. He remains on the active roster.

The Metro Sports Report provides regular updates on all the Metro graduates in pro baseball. Here is the report through Wednesday, July 1:

SCOTT SCHEBLER (CR Prairie), Oklahoma City, OF, Triple-A, Pacific Coast League (Dodgers): Schebler went 1-for-4 Wednesday in a 3-2 victory over Memphis. He played left field and hit fifth in the lineup. Schebler is batting .248 (60-for-242) with nine home runs and 29 RBIs.

CHAD CHRISTENSEN (CR Washington), Fort Myers, OF, High-A, Florida State League (Twins): Christensen went 1-for-4 with an RBI Wednesday in a 6-2 victory over Palm Beach. He played right field and hit eighth in the lineup. Christensen is batting .263 (67-for-255) with two home runs and 26 RBIs.

JON KELLER (CR Xavier), Frederick, P, High-A, Carolina League (Orioles): Keller did not pitch Wednesday in a 4-0 loss. He has a 3-4 record, 3.52 ERA and three saves.

MITCH KELLER (CR Xavier), Bristol, P, Rookie, Appalachian League (Pirates): Mitch Keller has not pitched in any of Bristol's nine games this season due to soreness in his right arm.

CHAD CHRISTENSEN (CR Washington), Fort Myers, OF, High-A, Florida State League (Twins): Christensen went 0-for-4 Tuesday in a 2-1 victory over Dunedin. He played left field and hit seventh in the lineup. Christensen is batting .263 (66-for-251) with two home runs and 25 RBIs.

JON KELLER (CR Xavier), Frederick, P, High-A, Carolina League (Orioles): Jon Keller pitched two shutout innings Tuesday in a 1-0 loss toWilmington. He allowed two hits with one strikeout and no walks. Keller has a 3-4 record, 3.52 ERA and three saves.

MITCH KELLER (CR Xavier), Bristol, P, Rookie, Appalachian League (Pirates): Mitch Keller has not pitched in any of Bristol's eight games this season due to soreness in his right arm. He is on the active 25-man roster and not on the disabled list.
