24 Metro athletes named all-academic in MVC

Twelve Metro baseball players and 12 Metro softball players have been named to the all-academic teams in the Mississippi Valley Conference this summer.

Each school in the league was equally represented with four players on the teams. Here are the winners:

Baseball

Jefferson - Jordan McCormick, Michael Rooney; Kennedy - Austin Benson, Zach Winters; Prairie - Eric Allard, Chaz Boots; Washington - Sam Kacena, Jordan Brown; Xavier - Alex Ries, Eric Zenisek; Linn-Mar - Jeremy Danover, Jordan Stroschein.

Softball

Jefferson - Katie Naber, Carson Burgart; Kennedy - Kassi Nunnikhoven, Amanda Gaffey; Prairie - Katie Carver, Katie Wieland; Washington - Gail Barnum, Jordon Pilcher; Xavier - Abby Bedard, Kristen Winter; Linn-Mar - Lindsey Harms, Leandra Martins.

Linn-Mar boys take MVC all-sports division title

The Linn-Mar Lions have won the MVC boys all-sports title in the Mississippi Division this year.

The Lions claimed titles in wrestling, basketball, track and tennis during the 2010-2011 school year. They finished with 60.5 points in the standings, based on 7-6-5-4-3-2-1 for finishing first through seventh in each sport.

Iowa City High placed second in the Mississippi Division with 52 points. Washington was third (50) and Kennedy finished fourth (49.5). Washington won titles in cross country and swimming, while Kennedy won crowns in golf and baseball.

Cedar Falls and Iowa City West tied for the title in the Valley Division with 60.5 points. Xavier was third (44), Prairie fifth (40.5) and Jefferson sixth (35.5.).

Xavier tied for first in soccer and Prairie won the cross country crown.

Mississippi Division

1. Linn-Mar (60.5), 2. Iowa City High (52), 3. Washington (50), 4. Kennedy (49.5), 5. Waterloo West (32.5), 6. Dubuque Wahlert (31.5), 7. Dubuque Senior (31).

Valley Division

1. (tie) Cedar Falls (60.5) and Iowa City West (60.5), 3. Xavier (44), 4. Dubuque Hempstead (43), 5. Prairie (40.5), 6. Jefferson (35.5), 7. Waterloo East (20).

Four Metro athletes unanimous all-MVC softball

Jefferson juniors Hannah Petersen and Rachel Sedlacek, Xavier senior Tyler Sampson and Linn-Mar freshman Ellie Rizor all were unanimous first team selections to the Mississippi Valley Conference all-conference teams released Friday.

The teams were chosen by a vote of MVC coaches.

Petersen, Sedlacek and Sampson were named to the Valley Division first team, Rizor was chosen for the Mississippi Division first team.

Prairie senior catcher Sheby Crist was the only other Metro player selected to the Valley Division first team.

Linn-Mar placed three members on the Mississippi Division first team. Rizor was  chosen as a utility player. Sophomores Kelsey Duggan and Kortlan Ollinger also were picked for the team.

Washington's Jordan Carr also was first team in the Mississippi Division.

Hempstead senior Hannah Koerperich was named the Valley Division athlete of the year. Coaches of the year were Alisha Frese and the Hempstead staff.

Waterloo West senior Jadyn Spencer, who set the Iowa all-time home run record and was a dominating pitcher, was the Mississippi Division athlete of the year. West Coach Tammy Utley and the Wahawk staff were named coaching staff of the year.

Linn-Mar girls win Mississippi all-sports title

The Linn-Mar High School girls captured the all-sports title in the Mississippi Division of the MVC this season, according to the league.

Linn-Mar finished with 47 points in 10 sports, beating Dubuque Wahlert by two points. The Lions tied for first in basketball and placed second in cross country, swimming and golf.

Iowa City West ran away with the Valley Division title with 61.5 points. The Women of Troy won titles in cross country, swimming, volleyball, basketball, track, tennis and soccer. Xavier finished second in the Valley Division with 47 points.

Points were awarded on a 7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for first place through seventh place in each sport.

Mississippi Division

1. Linn-Mar (47), 2. Dubuque Wahlert (45), 3. Iowa City High (41.5), 4. Washington (40.5), 5. Kennedy (39), 6. Waterloo West (37), 7. Dubuque Senior (30).

Valley Division

1. Iowa City West (61.5), 2. Xavier (47), 3. Jefferson (43), 4. Cedar Falls (39.5), 5. Dubuque Hempstead (37.5), 6. Prairie (34.5), 7. Waterloo East (16).

West drubs City High; tied with Xavier

IOWA CITY - Iowa City West whipped Iowa City High, 10-0, in five innings Wednesday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference baseball game.

The win moved West (25-9, 17-7) into a first-place tie with Cedar Rapids Xavier (24-8, 17-7) atop the Valley Division with two games left to play.

West, ranked eighth in the Class 4A poll, finishes its conference season Friday night with a doubleheader at Cedar Falls (14-17, 13-11).

Xavier, ranked No. 9 in Class 4A, travels to Dubuque for a doubleheader against Class 3A No. 3 Wahlert (27-8, 18-6) Friday afternoon. The Golden Eagles are wrapped open in their own title chase, trailing Cedar Rapids Kennedy by one game in the Mississippi Division.
