Hayden named MVC's top baseball athlete

Alex Hayden of Cedar Rapids Kennedy has been named the Mississippi Division Athlete of the Year on the 2012 Mississippi Valley Conference honor squad in baseball.

Hayden was joined on the Mississippi Division first team by batterymate Jimmy Lizarraga and outfielder Josh Jahlas.

Linn-Mar had three first team picks: pitcher Jake Stolley, outfielder Michael Redmond and pitcher/outfielder Nate Greve, who was selected to a utility position.

Pitcher Brennan Hammer, first baseman Tyler Votroubek, infielder Brayton Carlson and outfielder Jason Velvick from Prairie were first team picks in the Valley Division.

Jefferson outfielder Chance Tiedtke and Xavier catcher/first baseman/pitcher Mack Mattke also were first team picks in the Valley.

Hayden, Jahlas, Hammer, Votroubek and Tiedtke all were unanimous selections. The teams were selected by conference coaches.

Petersen named MVC's top athlete in softball

Hannah Petersen of Cedar Rapids Jefferson has been named the Valley Division Athlete of the Year on the 2012 Mississippi Valley Conference honor squad in softball.

Maddie Hansen, Carson Burgart and Rachel Sedlacek of Jefferson joined Petersen on the Valley Division first team, giving the J-Hawks four spots on the 12-girl squad.

Sydney Galligan of Xavier and Gabi Carter of Prairie also made first team in the Valley Division.

Alexis Kelsey, Kelsey Duggan and Maggie Rizor from Linn-Mar were first-team picks on the Mississippi Division team, as selected by the league coaches.

Tory Harman honored on MVC soccer squad

There were many outstanding female soccer players this year in the Mississippi Valley Conference, which produced two state champions in the Xavier Saints and Kennedy Cougars.

As far as the MVC coaches are concerned, Kennedy junior Tory Harman was the Athlete of the Year in the Mississippi Division. Harman topped the all-MVC honor squads announced Monday after helping the Cougars win the Class 3A state title on Saturday.

Allie Hutcheson, Kaela Dickerman and Emily Feltes of Kennedy joined Harman on the first team in the Mississippi Division.

Galbraith garners top MVC tennis honor

Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior Riley Galbraith has been named male Athlete of the Year in the MVC Mississippi Division.

Galbraith, who also plays on the Cougars' soccer team, finished fourth in the state in singles last year and is considered one of the top contenders for this year's title.

All six members of the Mississippi Division first team were unanimous selections. Five are from the Metro. Joining Galbraith are Linn-Mar sophomore Brady Anderson and senior Tyler McCann, Washington junior Mitch Blades and senior Mitch Anderson, and Dubuque Wahlert junior Brandon Schneider. Brady Anderson and Mitch Anderson are brothers.
