Paige is MVC Player of the Year

Linn-Mar senior Marcus Paige has been chosen Mississippi Division Athlete of the Year by Mississippi Valley Conference boys basketball coaches.

Paige, who will play his college ball at North Carolina, leads the state in scoring with a 28.4 average.

Paige and Dubuque Wahlert's Jake May were unanimous picks on the Mississippi Division team. Cody Bell of Kennedy also was a first team pick.

Taylor Olson of Jefferson and Matt MacDougall of Prairie were unanimous first team selections on the Valley team. Iowa City West, which takes an undefeated record into next week's state tournament, had three first team choices: Dondre Alexander, Jeremy Morgan and Wyatt Lohaus.

Harrington, who has signed to run track at Alabama, was the Athlete of the Year in the Valley Division.

Linn-Mar's Chris Robertson was Coach of the Year in the Mississippi Division. Iowa City West's Steve Bergman was tabbed in the Valley Division.

Bruce named top boys bowler in MVC & Metro

Cedar Rapids Washington junior Quincy Bruce nabbed a couple of top honors Friday.

Bruce was named the Athlete of the Year in the Mississippi Valley Conference (Mississippi Division) and on the all-Metro team in a vote by coaches.

Prairie's Brogan Fiala also reaped a top honor. He was named the Athlete of the Year in the MVC Valley Division.

Bruce averaged 219.3 pins per game and led the Warriors to a Class 2A state tournament berth. Fiala had a 219.4 average and helped the Hawks to a 2A berth.

Justin Wyant of Linn-Mar, Zach Trcka of Jefferson, and Brandon Wagner of Prairie joined Bruce and Fiala on both the MVC and all-Metro first teams.

Dreyson Robe of Linn-Mar was first team all-MVC. Jeremy Cline of Prairie was first team all-Metro.

Washington's Monica Reeves was named Coach of the Year in the MVC Mississippi Division. Prairie's Don Wilfong and Kevin Cline earned the honor in the MVC Valley Division. Cline and Xavier's Russ Camacho were the Metro Coaches of the Year.

Trcka named top bowler in Metro & MVC

Cedar Rapids Xavier junior Tara Trcka collected a couple of big honors Friday.

Trcka was named the Athlete of the Year for girls bowling in the Mississippi Valley Conference (Valley Division) and in the Metro area in voting by coaches.

Trcka was the defending Class 1A state champion, but finished eighth in Thursday's state meet at Des Moines. She had a 217-pin average during the season.

Nicole Petersen of Jefferson, Stacey Schwarzenstein and McKenzie Routhe of Linn-Mar, and Keely Pernicka of Washington joined Trcka as first-team selections on the all-MVC and all-Metro teams.

Lions, Cougars top MVC all-sports standings

The Linn-Mar Lions have opened a commanding lead in the Mississippi Valley Conference boys all-sports standings in the Mississippi Division.

The Lions have won MVC titles in basketball, wrestling, football and cross country and lead the Mississippi Division with 42.5 points with only four sports left in the school year.

Dubuque Senior (31.5), Washington (31), Kennedy (29) and Iowa City High (29) are in a tight battle for the No. 2 spot in the Mississippi Division.

Strait named top player in MVC & Metro

Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior Courtney Strait collected a pair of big honors Wednesday.

Strait was named the Athlete of the Year for girls basketball in the Mississippi Valley Conference (Mississippi Division) and in the Metro area, based on voting by coaches.

Strait, a 5-foot-9 guard, leads all Class 4A scorers this season with an average of 20.9 points per game.

Danielle Franklin of Washington, Madison Dellamuth of Prairie and Maddie Koolbeck of Jefferson joined Strait as first-team selections on the all-MVC and all-Metro teams.
