Robin Becker headed to IGHSAU Hall of Fame

Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s Robin Becker, Mary Berdo of Washington and Ankeny standout Nicky Wieben will be inducted into the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Basketball Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will take place at halftime of the Class 1A championship game Friday, March 4.

Robin Becker-Pington was a standout at Benton Community and Cedar Rapids Jefferson from 1983-to-1986. She was a two-time Mississippi Valley Conference selection. She went on to St. Ambrose and became a three-time NAIA All-American. She is still school’s career leader in points, rebounds and scoring average. She has  gone on to enjoy success in the coaching ranks, serving as head coach at her alma mater for seven seasons before landing at Illinois State, where she led the Redbirds to two NCAA Tournament appearances. She is currently in her first season as the head coach at Missouri.

Mary Berdo was one of Iowa’s best prep shooters for Washington High School from 1993-to-1996, guiding the Demons to a pair of state tournament appearances.  She was the first Iowa prep to score 2,000 career points in the five-player era,. She ended her career with 2,026 career points and was the state’s career leader in assists (745), a figure that still ranks second on the IGHSAU’s all-time list.

She played collegiate basketball at the University of Iowa. As a senior, she averaged 8.1 points with 44 three-points off the bench to help the Hawkeyes win the Big Ten Tournament and advance to the second round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament. She currently works for the NCAA and helps run tournaments in Division I volleyball, field hockey, tennis and wrestling.

Nicky Wieben was a four-year starter for Ankeny’s standout basketball team that won an unprecedented four-straight Class 4A championships from 2002 to 2005. During her four-year career, the Hawkeyettes were 95-11, and 53-1 her junior and senior seasons. Nicky was a four-time all-tournament team selection, earning all-tournament captain honors twice, and was twice named Iowa’s Gatorade Player of the Year.  She went on to have an exceptional career at Iowa State, helping the Cyclones reach the NCAA three times, including an Elite Eight appearance in 2009. She finished her career as Iowa State’s career leader in blocks.
