Kylie Jonas cruised to a 10-0 victory at No. 1 singles Tuesday as Jefferson topped Waterloo East, 8-1, in a Mississippi Valley Conference tennis meet at Jefferson.

Netolicky starred for Indiana in ABA

In the rich history of Metro area basketball, only eight players have gone on to be drafted at the highest level of professional basketball. And only one has played in a NBA or WNBA regular season game.

Stacy Frese, Washington product set to be inducted into Iowa State’s Hall of Fame in October, played 21 games for the WNBA Utah Starzz in 2000. She was a third-round draft pick of Utah.

That is likely to change in a few weeks, though. Linn-Mar’s Kiah Stokes, a first-round pick of the New York Liberty this year, promises to play a significant role with Bill Laimbeer’s team. The Liberty open the WNBA season June 5 against the Atlanta Dream, whose roster likely will include first-round draft pick Samantha Logic of Iowa.

The WNBA plays a 34-game regular season schedule. The rookie minimum salary in the league is $34,500.

Morgan Meese will run for Kohawks

Morgan Meese of Cedar Rapids Jefferson plans to continue her successful track career at Coe College next year.

Meese is a member of the championship relay teams at Jefferson. The J-Hawks won the 4x200 relay and the 4x100 relay at the Drake Relays this year. They broke the Iowa all-time record in the 4x200 and matched the all-time record in the 4x100.

Meese helped Jefferson win the 4x200 relay at the state meet last year.

Jeff girls sparkle in 4x100 at Drake

DES MOINES - This one's for you, Coach.

The Cedar Rapids Jefferson girls blazed to victory in the 4x100 meter relay at the Drake Relays in record time Saturday afternoon and quickly heaped credit on Coach Bill Calloway.

The J-Hawks captured the event in 47.55 seconds, tying the Iowa all-time best that was set by Des Moines Roosevelt at the Drake Relays in 2012.

"I'd really like to thank Coach Calloway, because his whole life is us," said senior Morgan Meese. "He's put his whole life into us being here and us being as strong as we are.

"I honestly can't thank him enough," she said. "He does so much for us. This is for him."

Jenks claims 7th title at Drake

DES MOINES - As it turns out, Stephanie Jenks can run in traffic. And she's developed a strong kick for the rare occasion when she's actually challenged in a race.

The Linn-Mar junior needed both skills Friday to capture the 800 meter run at the 106th Drake Relays for her seventh career victory in America's Classic.

Jenks maneuvered her way through a tight pack of runners and sprinted down the home stretch to win the 800 in 2 minutes, 9.64 seconds in a talented field.

Jasmine Staebler of Clayton Ridge (2:11.40), Erika Lewis of Waukee (2:12.38) and Joy Ripslinger of Davenport Assumption (2:12.42) gave Jenks a good race, but the Linn-Mar junior had too much speed and too much moxie for them all.

"I really don't have to kick too often, but this is one of the things we've been working on, being able to shift gears during the race," said Jenks. "I had to have it at Kansas last weekend (when she won the 1600 at the Kansas Relays).

J-Hawks break record in 4x200 at Drake

DES MOINES - For awhile Friday morning, it looked like Jefferson's dreams of a golden journey at the 106th Drake Relays had been shattered.

By Friday afternoon, however, the J-Hawks and gutsy sprinter Jasmine Blue had their championship flags and a coveted place in the Drake record book.

Abbie Ranschau, Blue, Morgan Meese and Lucy Schneekloth broke the Drake record in the 4x200 relay in 1 minute, 40.96 seconds, barely missing Jefferson's own all-time Iowa best of 1:40.94 set in 2013.

It nearly didn't happen.

Blue appeared to hurt herself at the end of the sprint medley relay earlier in the day when the J-Hawks finished third in a tight race, but a lengthy leg massage had Blue back in business for the 4x200 relay about three hours later.

Jacobus falling in love with decathlon

DES MOINES - Derek Jacobus was a four-sport athlete during his days at Kennedy High School, but that was child's play compared to what he's doing now.

Jacobus has become a decathlete in his first year at the University of Northern Iowa, which means he has to concentrate on 10 different events at the same time.

He competed in his first decathlon Wednesday and Thursday at the Drake Relays and finished a respectable 14th out of 25 contestants.

"First ever," he said with a smile, "and I'm competing with All-Americans."

Timauntay Jones, a Cedar Rapids Jefferson grad, placed fifth in the men's 800 meter run Thursday in 1:51.27 for Oklahoma State.

Hargens takes 2nd at CRANDIC golf

Sierra Hargens of Kennedy shot a 12-over-par 83 on a cold, windy day to finish second at the CRANDIC golf tournament at the Ellis Golf Course Wednesday.

Sarah Overton of Iowa City High claimed medalist honors with a 10-over 81. Overton and Hargens were the only two players to crack 90 in adverse conditions.

Iowa City West won the team championship by 25 shots over Iowa City High. Xavier finished third in the team standings and Kennedy was fourth, followed by Washington, Prairie, Marion, Linn-Mar and Jefferson.

Amy Olberding and Catie Locher of Xavier tied for fifth place in the individual standings with 91's.

Calloway's 'best group' ready for Drake

After more than four decades of training high school runners, Jefferson girls track coach Bill Calloway knows he’s no miracle worker.

Like height, you can’t teach pure speed.

“I can’t make a quarter horse into a thoroughbred,” he says. “But I can help make a quarter horse run faster.”

Year after year – and this one is no exception – Coach Calloway trots out a stable of sprinters that are almost always among the best in the state. More than that, he has a knack for getting them to run faster together as a team.

While excelling also in individual events, Jefferson girls have historically specialized in the relay races. And with what Calloway calls “the best group I’ve ever coached,” they’ll be on display the next three days at the prestigious Drake Relays in Des Moines.
