Baker wins title at Keith Young meet

CEDAR FALLS - Brenden Baker of Cedar Rapids Jefferson captured the 106-pound title at the Keith Young Invitational wrestling tournament in Cedar Falls Saturday.

Baker trimmed Jack Wagner of Bettendorf, 4-2, in the finals.

Kyle Briggs (120 pounds) and Luke Sedlacek (160) placed third for the J-Hawks, who finished fourth out of 15 teams in the standings.

Nolan Hromidko placed second at 113 pounds for Kennedy, which finished in 14th place.

No.5 Valley trumps J-Hawks, 76-58

The Jefferson J-Hawks got 49 points from Amanda Ollinger, Maddy Blietz and Kennedy Dighton Saturday, but it wasn't nearly enough.

Grace Vander Weide hit five 3-pointers and poured in 27 points as No.5 West Des Moines Valley defeated the J-Hawks, 76-58, at the Jefferson gym.

Ollinger made three 3-pointers and led Jefferson (2-3) with 17 points. Blietz hit four triples and scored 16 points. Dighton also netted 16.

Hannah Fuller pitched in 15 points for West Des Moines Valley (3-0).

J-Hawks hold off Marion, 57-53

Cedar Rapids Jefferson survived a fourth-quarter comeback by the Marion Indians and snagged a 57-53 win over a determined Marion squad at Jefferson Saturday night.

The J-Hawks were led by Jacob Olson with 25 points. His two free throws with 3.7 seconds left iced the victory.

Brandon Horman, co-coach of Jefferson, joined ESPN radio and Scott Unash after the game and emphasized that nothing comes easy, but the J-Hawks made some big plays down the stretch and “When better decisions are made, we came out OK.”

Blietz leads J-Hawks by Cedar Falls

CEDAR FALLS - Maddy Blietz scored 15 points Friday as Cedar Rapids Jefferson nipped Cedar Falls, 45-42, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls basketball game in Cedar Falls.

Kennedy Dighton finished with 10 points and seven rebounds for the J-Hawks (2-2, 1-1). Amanda Ollinger contributed 10 rebounds and seven points.

Emma Gerdes scored 18 points for Cedar Falls (1-2, 0-2).

The J-Hawks used an 8-0 run early in the fourth quarter to erase a 30-29 deficit and grab a 37-30 advantage. Blietz made two free throws to begin the spurt, Kieley Brathaite scored to make it 33-30, Blietz scored to make it 35-30 and Dighton scored to make it 37-30.

Blood drives Prairie bowlers past Jeff

Rylee Blood had the line for Prairie Friday, rolling a 247 high game and 435 series that led Prairie past Jefferson, 2716-2316, in girls bowling at Lancer Lanes.

Rylea Bennett rolled a 407 series for Jefferson.

Kluth's 522 rolls J-Hawks past Prairie

Austin Kluth rolled a 522 series to lead Jefferson past Prairie, 3286-2866, Friday in boys bowling at Lancer Lanes.

Kluth rolled games of 267 and 255. Tyler Fowler, Victor Baccam and Noah Tiedtke all cracked the 430-mark for their series.

Josh Kacena paced Prairie with games of 233 and 246 for a 479 series.

J-Hawk grapplers stun No.8 IC West

WATERLOO - Josh Allen upset Micah Kelsay at 195 pounds to seal Jefferson's 37-19 upset win over the No.8 Trojans Thursday night in a season-opening double dual wrestling meet at Waterloo East.

Jefferson also whipped Waterloo East, 72-3.

The J-Hawks won 9 of the 14 bouts against West and got pins from Brenden Baker at 106, Tavian Rashed at 145 and Dalton Kuehl at 220.

Olson nets 25 as J-Hawks fall

CLINTON - Jacob Olson scored 25 points Tuesday night as the Jefferson J-Hawks opened the season with a 64-59 loss at Clinton.

Tyler Konigsmark contributed 13 points for Jefferson and Lucas Larson had 11.

Javian Jones led Clinton with 25 points.

The J-Hawks trailed by eight points at halftime, 32-24. They rallied and grabbed a 53-51 lead late in the game before it slipped away.

Hutchins sparks Prairie by J-Hawks

In a fast-paced duel from start to finish, the Jefferson girls had Prairie on the run early but faded halfway through and fell, 73-64, on their home turf Tuesday night.

“We felt lucky to be down by only one at halftime,” said Prairie Coach Steve Doser. “And I thought the first three minutes of the second half were really key.

“We came out a lot more aggressive. We really picked it up, had a great rebounding effort and made some shots. That was the difference.”

Down by as many as eight points in the first half, Prairie took its first lead at 33-32 right after the intermission on a long two-pointer by leading scorer Cyerra Hutchins.

Ollinger nets 30 as J-Hawks roll

Amanda Ollinger poured in 30 points, snared 12 rebounds and collected six assists Saturday night as Jefferson dumped Bettendorf, 81-65, in a girls basketball game at Jefferson.

Maddy Blietz popped in 20 points and was 12 for 12 at the foul line for the J-Hawks (1-1). Kennedy Dighton contributed 15 points and eight rebounds.

Jefferson zoomed to a 23-8 lead after one quarter and led 44-34 at halftime. Bettendorf pulled with 60-51 entering the final period, but the J-Hawks put the game away with a 21-14 edge in the last stanza.
