J-Hawks top Cougars in girls bowling

Megan Kitzmiller rolled a 358 series Monday to help Jefferson trim Kennedy, 2369-2296, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls bowling meet at the Cedar Rapids Bowling Center.

Jamie Milota of Kennedy turned in the best game with a 214 and bowled a 357 series to finish just one pin behind Kitzmiller.

JEFFERSON: Megan Kitzmiller 166+192=358, Madison Rasmussen 146+188=334, Hailey Kimble 169+160=329, Allie Schirmer 146+144=290, Lauren Sheets 120+128=248, Maddie Kisling 99+148=247.

KENNEDY: Jamie Milota 143+214=357, Jill Zaiser 154+164=318, Alyssa Wiedemeier 128+147=275, Abbie Haller 119+126=245, Sam Eltze 107+125=232, Sydney Helms 100+112=212.

Jefferson: 1559 + 810 = 2369.
Kennedy: 1427 + 869 = 2296.

 

Briggs wins Metro Spotlight Award

Kyle Briggs of Cedar Rapids Jefferson is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Briggs, a senior, has gotten off to a terrific start with the Jefferson wrestling team this season. He is ranked No. 2 in Class 3A at 152 pounds and raised his record to 20-0 Saturday with a spotless performance at the Pipestone Duals in Pipestone, Minn.

Briggs went 5-0 at Pipestone with three pins, a technical fall and a forfeit.

Briggs, Culver lead J-Hawks in Minnesota

PIPESTONE, Minn. - Kyle Briggs and Matt Culver enjoyed perfect days for the Jefferson wrestling team at a tournament in Pipestone (Minn.) on Saturday.

Briggs, who is ranked No. 2 at 152 pounds, went 5-0 in the dual meet event with three pins, a technical fall and a forfeit. Culver, who is ranked No. 8 at 170 pounds, finished 5-0 with three pins, a decision and a forfeit.

Joseph Sibomana, Brenden Baker, Zach Main, Tavian Rashed and Nick Dreckman went 4-1 for the J-Hawks.

Jefferson placed second with a 4-1 record in the tournament. The J-Hawks beat TMS/WWG (50-24), Pipestone (39-27), Luverne (52-27) and Medford (75-5). Their only loss was to Wabasso/RRC (37-26).

Briggs raised his record to a perfect 20-0 this season. Culver raised his mark to 20-2.

   

Hummell leads Jeff swimmers in DM

DES MOINES - Paul Hummell won two individual events and swam on the triumphant 200 freestyle relay Saturday at the Ken Gaeth Invitational in Des Moines.

Hummell captured the 50 free and 100 breaststroke to help the J-Hawks place third out of six teams in the standings. Luke Hummell, Ryan Martin and Max McChensey also swam on the 200 free relay.

Des Moines East won the meet with 287 points, followed closely by Boone (274) and Jefferson (272).

McChesney took the 500 free and placed second in the 200 free, in addition to swimming on the victorious 200 free relay. The J-Hawks also got second-place showings from Noah Hoogestraat in the 200 IM, Luke Hummell in the 100 free and the 200 medley relay.

J-Hawks get road win in Davenport

DAVENPORT - Dennis McKinney scored 14 points and Royshawn Webb added 10 to lead the Jefferson boys basketball team to a 55-47 win here Monday night over Davenport North.

The J-Hawks (3-5) also got nine points from Adam Van Oort and eight from Kane Kramer.

Corey Lamonte led North (0-5) with 14 points. VJ Wilmington added 12.

Kennedy swimmers sweep past J-Hawks

The Kennedy boys swimming team won all 11 varsity events Monday night en route to a 119-51 dual meet victory over Jefferson at the Kennedy pool.

Stefan Kitsos, Brady Gibson and Cade Schoenauer led the Cougars. Each won two individual events and were a part of two winning relays.

Ranschau commits to UNI for track

Abbie Ranschau and Jasmine Blue have been partners on record-setting relay teams for the Cedar Rapids Jefferson girls track team during their high school careers.

Now they'll be partners at the University of Northern Iowa as well.

Ranschau has decided to continue her promising track career at UNI after she graduates from Jefferson this spring. Blue previously announced her plans to run for the Panthers.

Ranschau enjoyed a brilliant overall performance at the Class 4A state track meet last May as a junior. She won the 100 meter hurdles and helped Jefferson capture the 4x100 and 4x200 relays, highlighted by a state record in the 4x200.

Ranschau also helped the J-Hawks place second in the sprint medley at the state meet.

Jefferson finished fifth in the team standings at state.

 

J-Hawks win 3 titles at SE Polk

RUNNELLS - Cody Clendenen, Kyle Briggs and Nick Dreckman of Cedar Rapids Jefferson won titles at the Red Owens Holiday Classic wrestling tournament Saturday at Southeast Polk High School.

Clendenen took the 145-pound title with a 6-0 victory over Korbin Blankenship of Des Moines Roosevelt in the finals. Briggs raised his record to 15-0 when he pinned Shawn Brown of Des Moines Lincoln in the championship match at 152. Dreckman trimmed Kameron Padavich of Southeast Polk, 8-7, for top honors at 182 pounds.

Brenden Baker (120), Tavian Rashed (160) and Matt Culver (170) finished second for Jefferson. Joseph Sibomana (113) and Dalton Mastin (132) placed third for the J-Hawks.

 

 

 

 

   

Techau sparks Saints by J-Hawks

Max Techau scored 23 points to lead the Xavier boys basketball team to a 59-44 win over Jefferson on Friday at Jefferson.

The J-Hawks cut the lead to 37-34 with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Saints answered with a 22-10 run to finish the game.

Blake Whitten had 10 points for Xavier (4-1) and Matt Mims added nine points.

Royshawn Webb scored 10 points to lead Jefferson (2-5).
