Jefferson High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Split leaves J-Hawks in limbo

Jefferson had to win two games Monday night to guarantee a share of an MVC division softball title.

The J-Hawks fell one short. They beat Iowa City West, 2-0, in their first game, but lost the nightcap, 2-1, at Larry Niemeyer Field.

So now their fate is in the hands of Dubuque Senior.

Senior beat Dubuque Wahlert Monday, 8-0, but its second game with the Golden Eagles was rained out. The Rams have a doubleheader at Waterloo East Tuesday and will make up their game with Wahlert Wednesday. If they win all three, they claim the Mississippi Division championship. With two wins, they tie the J-Hawks.

Olson tosses no-hitter as Jeff sweeps Cougars

It was a potent 1-2 punch that helped power the Jefferson girls to a doubleheader sweep Tuesday night at Kennedy.

Young pitching phenom Alyssa Olson claimed the first no-hitter of her fast-rising career and came within a walk of a perfect game in the opener.

Her slugging catcher, Maddie Hansen, slammed two doubles in one inning to knock in three runs during a nine-run outburst in the 14-0 five-inning affair.

Then, in the nightcap, Hansen unloaded a deep two-run homer to left-center as the Class 5A No.9 J-Hawks strolled, 6-2.

No.2 Ottumwa trims J-Hawks in classic

Except for the gunny sack-sized bag of ice covering her right shoulder, Jefferson softball pitcher Alyssa Olson looked fresh as could be after throwing strikes for more three hours Friday night against the No.2 team in the state.

“Really, I’m not tired at all,” said the wispy sophomore with a wicked whip of an arm. “I tried to stay strong and dig down deep.”

For 13 innings, Olson mowed down almost everyone in the lineup from Ottumwa (23-4) that came into the game with a team batting average of .402 and an on-base percentage of .470.

The one Bulldog she couldn’t muzzle ended up beating her, 4-2, in a classic battle between state powers.

Wyant, Stroschein toss Lions by J-Hawks

Justin Wyant and Austin Stroschein will be leaving for college later this summer and the next step in their baseball careers, but they'd like to help the Linn-Mar Lions make a return trip to the Class 4A state tournament before they leave.

Wyant and Stroschein took steps in that direction with good pitching performances Wednesday night as Linn-Mar swept a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader from Jefferson, 13-7 and 6-3, at the Linn-Mar complex.

Wyant allowed only one run in five innings in the opener in sweltering conditions, then Stroschein went the distance and threw 100 pitches in the nightcap.
