No.9 J-Hawks split with Hempstead

Alyssa Olson tossed a two-hitter and Kaitlyn Davidson drove in two runs as No.9 Jefferson trimmed Dubuque Hempstead, 3-1, in the first game of a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at Larry Niemeyer Field Tuesday.

Hempstead took the nightcap, 4-3.

Olson struck out eight batters in the opener and raised her record to 14-1.

Erin Kuba hit a two-run homer in the second game for Jefferson (23-7, 15-5). Dani Stromert and Maddie Hansen had two hits.

Rachel Broghammer will run at UNI

CEDAR FALLS - Cedar Rapids Jefferson graduate Rachel Broghammer, a two-time state champion with the J-Hawks, plans to join the University of Northern Iowa track team.

Broghammer ran the anchor leg when Jefferson won the Class 4A state title in the 4x200 relay this year, snapping a state record that had stood since 1975. She also helped the J-Hawks win the 4x200 relay as a sophomore in 2011.

Broghammer helped the J-Hawks finish second in the 4x100 relay, third in the sprint medley relay and fourth in the 4x400 relay at the state meet this year. Jefferson placed fifth in the team standings, its highest finish in more than 10 years.

Dani Stromert went 2-for-3 for the J-Hawks (22-6). Hannah Towns was 2-for-2 with an RBI.

It was Jefferson's only game Saturday.

No.2 Trojans trip J-Hawks twice

IOWA CITY - Reid Bonner's grand slam capped a seven-run fifth inning in the opener and Colin Baker's two-run homer put Iowa City West ahead to stay in the nightcap and the Trojans swept a Mississippi Valley Conference baseball doubleheader from Jefferson, 11-0 and 6-3, Friday at West.

The games were scheduled to be played at Jefferson, but were switched to West because Friday morning's downpour in Cedar Rapids made the J-Hawk diamond unplayable. Jefferson was the home team in both games.

West (19-3, 13-2 MVC) is ranked second in Class 4A. The twin wins ran the Trojans' winning streak to nine games. They have won 14 of their last 15 games.

Jefferson (6-17, 4-12) outhit West in the nightcap, 7-6. Spencer VanScoyoc had two hits in the nightcap and three in the twinbill. He had two doubles.

Topsy-turvy J-Hawks split twinbill

His ballclub is battling for a division title in the Mississippi Valley Conference, but Dubuque Hempstead Coach Jeff Rapp complains about inconsistency.

“We’re like a Jekyll and Hyde team,” he said after the Mustangs (9-8, 8-4 MVC) split a doubleheader at Cedar Rapids Jefferson Friday night. “We’ve had some very good games. But we’ve also been ugly at times.”

He’s got nothing on first-year Jefferson Coach Kyle Rodenkirk. His young J-Hawks (5-13, 4-8) were embarrassed on their home field Wednesday night by Prairie, losing the opener 15-1 and the nightcap 7-4.

So what do they do but jump on Hempstead for three runs in the first inning of the first game Friday and cruise to a 6-2 win behind the solid pitching of sophomore Lucas Larson.
