Uthoff leads J-Hawks past Prairie

Jarrod Uthoff scored 25 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked five shots to lead No. 10 Jefferson past stubborn Prarie, 50-41, Thursday night in the J-Hawks' regular season finale at Prairie.

The final score was much closer than anticipated, although the J-Hawks (15-5, 11-5 MVC) were coming into the game off a hard-fought loss to No. 1 Linn-Mar on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Prairie was trying to end a 10-game losing streak.  The Hawks (3-17, 2-13) get another chance to snap the skid Friday night when they host Dubuque Hempstead in a makeup game to end the regular season.

Despite not scoring until the 4:20 mark of the first quarter, Prairie hung tough with Jefferson in the first half. The first quarter ended with Jefferson holding an 8-6 lead and the J-Hawks' margin was 23-17 at halftime.

J-Hawks beat Senior; No. 2 Linn-Mar next

They were sick. They were tired. But mostly, the Jefferson girls basketball team was sick and tired of losing and they played like it Wednesday night.

Sophomore Taylor Jacobson, who is battling a case of mononucleosis, scored 14 of her 17 points in the second half to lead Jefferson past Dubuque Senior, 66-54, in a Class 4A regional quarterfinal game at Jefferson.

“I got a little tired but I pushed through it,” Jacobson said. “I wanted to win so bad.”

Jefferson's prize for beating Senior is a game against second-ranked Linn-Mar (19-2) Saturday night at Linn-Mar. The Lions had a bye in the quarterfinal round.

Bohannon, Paige torch J-Hawks for 30 apiece

Linn-Mar senior Matt Bohannon knows how to lighten the mood before a big game.

The top-ranked Lions, crippled and missing their two tallest starters, were about to play Jarrod Uthoff and the Jefferson J-Hawks Tuesday night when Bohannon said something on the bench that had everybody laughing.

The Lions were still smiling after the game.

Bohannon and Marcus Paige poured in 30 points apiece as Linn-Mar topped the 10th-ranked J-Hawks, 70-64, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Jefferson.
