Strong Baker round carries Cougar girls

Kennedy erased an 87-pin deficit with a strong showing in the Baker round to beat Dubuque Senior, 2697-2680, Monday afternoon in girls bowling at Cedar Rapids Bowl.

Zariell Oldfield shot a 222 high game for Kennedy. Amanda Weidemeier shot a 215 and finished with a team-high 406 series for the Cougars.

Kennedy trailed by 87 pins after first-round singles, and still trailed by 58 pins after the third Baker game.

But the Cougars rolled a 215 in the fourth game to taake a one-pin lead and finished with a 199 that provided the 17-pin margin.

Kennedy girls smoke Marion in finale

The Kennedy girls basketball team came out smoking Saturday night at home against Marion for a non-conference season finale, put the game away early and rolled to a 74-42 victory.

“We wanted to play well and make this a dress rehearsal for our first round tournament game against Jefferson,” said Kennedy Coach Tony Vis. The Cougars host Jefferson on Wednesday in a 5A regional tournament game. “Marion has a good team and we played with excellent offensive efficiency especially in the first half.”

Kennedy (14-7) had three players in double figures. Stephanie Botkin led all scorers with 15 points. Jordan Holmes and Paige Hendrickson added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Lions' Uhlir stands tall in win over Cougars

Listed at 5-foot-10, Linn-Mar reserve point guard Nic Uhlir may stand that tall on his tippy-toes.

But the sophomore shooting specialist is playing big at just the right time.

Averaging just 4.8 points a game in part-time play, he pumped in 17 Tuesday with five 3-pointers in a 65-41 win over Dubuque Wahlert.

He followed that up Friday night at home with another team-high 16 points on four more long-range bombs to lead the Lions past Kennedy, 57-42.

McKiernan has the line in Kennedy loss

IOWA CITY - Troy McKiernan had the ball rolling Friday afternoon, firing games of 170 and 278 for a 448 series in a losing effort for Kennedy against Iowa City High. The Little Hawks won the boys bowling meet, 2796-2771.

McKiernan helped Kennedy to a 39-pin lead after the first round.

But City High fired four 200 games in the Baker round to rally for the win.

Meier leads Kennedy girls past Linn-Mar

Both schools in this rivalry were wrapping up their regular season Mississippi Valley Conference action in the game at the Cougar gym and it was Cedar Rapids Kennedy finishing the conference action on a high note with a 58-51 victory over Linn-Mar on Senior Night.  The leading scorer of the contest for Kennedy was Madison Meier with 15 points and Paige Hendrickson chipped in with 14 leading the Cougars.

Kennedy, a member of the Mississippi Division held on to third place for sure with a 9-4 record in conference play and finished behind the two Iowa City schools in the standings.  Kennedy has a non-conference encounter Saturday against Marion in the Cougar gym to finish out the regular season before beginning Class 5A tournaments with a matchup next Wednesday against Jefferson at Kennedy.

Hillyer, Harman of Kennedy pick their colleges

Cedar Rapids Kennedy tailback Alex Hillyer will continue his football career at Iowa Western Community College.

Hillyer rushed for 1,662 yards and 20 touchdowns last season. He was named first team all-state, all-Mississippi Valley Conference and all-Metro.

Tory Harman will sign to play soccer at the University of Iowa. She helped the Cougars win the Class 3A state title last year and was named the Player of the Year on the all-Metro and all-Mississippi Valley Conference teams. She had 10 goals and eight assists.

Warriors whip Cougars for 3rd win in row

It's hard to call a guy the "Metro Coach of the Year" when his team has won only four games all season, but you might want to give Adam Sanchez a serious look.

The young man has performed miracles with the Cedar Rapids Washington boys basketball team this season in his first year as head coach.

The Warriors, winless and hopeless a year ago, drilled the Kennedy Cougars 54-38 Tuesday night for their third Mississippi Valley Conference victory in a row.

Kennedy girls end Wash's title hopes

Many of the girls on the Kennedy and Washington basketball teams are friends from playing on the same AAU clubs during the spring and summer, but there's no love lost when they tangle in high school games.

"Everything off the court is friendly and we get along, but once we're on the court the friendship kind of goes away," Kennedy junior Paige Hendrickson said Tuesday night. "We play to win."

Did they ever, on both sides.

Stephanie Botkin tossed in 25 points and Hendrickson notched 24 as the Cougars dented the Warriors, 72-65, in a highly entertaining Mississippi Valley Conference game in the Washington gym.

Fontana nets 300th as Cougars belt J-Hawks

Bob Fontana's basketball office at Kennedy High School is located just beyond a row of toilets in a corner of the boys locker room.

Now that he's won 300 games, maybe the school will give him fancier digs.

Fontana reached the milestone Friday night as the Cougars stuffed Jefferson, 47-32, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Kennedy.

Kennedy girls knock off J-Hawks

Tony Vis has been looking for consistency and balance from his girls basketball team at Kennedy High School this year.

He found it Friday night.

Jordan Holmes led four Cougars in double figures as Kennedy dumped Jefferson, 64-43, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Kennedy.
