No. 8 Cougars sunk by No. 5 IC West

IOWA CITY - The eighth-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy swim team got splashed by No.5 Iowa City West, 115-71, Tuesday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet in Iowa City.

Hannah Botkin won the 50-yard freestyle for the Cougars and swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay with Michele Wasta, Amanda Jacobsen and Jessica Schmeiser.

Iowa City West won 10 of 12 events.

Kennedy spikers hold off Saints, 3-2

Maybe it was Kennedy's rich tradition in volleyball that made the difference. Or maybe it was Kennedy's tough early-season schedule that gave the Cougars a slight edge over the Xavier Saints Tuesday night.

Or maybe the Saints simply didn't play very well. That's what Xavier Coach arb Sullivan said in her post-game remarks.

Kennedy trimmed Xavier in a five-set marathon, 26-24, 27-25, 17-25, 23-25, 15-11 in a Mississippi Valley Conference match at Kennedy.

Cougars 5-1 at SE Polk tourney

RUNNELLS -- Kennedy won five of six matches Saturday at the Southeast Polk Invitational volleyball tournament.

The Cougars beat Ottumwa twice, Des Moines North, Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson and Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln, all in straight sets.

Kennedy was beaten by West Des Moines Valley, 2-0.

The Cougars finished ninth out of 20 teams. They improved their overall record to 8-7.

Cougars dumped by No. 5 Trojans, 35-14

The Kennedy Cougars thought they could cover Iowa City West receiver Jeremy Morgan with somebody six inches shorter Thursday night.

They came up a mile short.

Nate Boland lobbed two touchdown passes to the 6-foot-6 Morgan on Iowa City West's first two possesions and the No. 5 Trojans left Kingston Stadium with a 35-14 victory over the winless and frustrated Cougars.

Kennedy girls win CR Invitational

The Stephanie Jenks era in Metro cross country began with a bang Thursday at the Cedar Rapids Invitational.

Jenks, a freshman at Linn-Mar who is a nationally ranked triathlete, beat a strong field of older runners in the first varsity cross country race of her career.

Jenks covered the 4-kilometer course in 14 minutes, 26.71 seconds for a 16-second victory over Ashlynn Yokum of Iowa City West.

Jenks missed the first few meets of the season due to her national schedule of events, but she made up for lost time Thursday. She's also competing for the Linn-Mar swimming team this season and is one of the top swimmers on the club.

The Kennedy girls continued their string of impressive outings this season by winning the team championship with 54 points, nipping Linn-Mar by five markers.

Little Hawks nip Cougars, Saints at CRANDIC golf

In a match as tight as size-9 shoes on size-10 feet, Iowa City High claimed the CRANDIC boys golf meet by one stroke over Kennedy and two strokes over Xavier on a sun-kissed Ellis Park course Tuesday.

Xavier boasted the medalist with a 73 by junior Matt Junge, but the Little Hawks’ Zach MacMillan came in second at 74 and Grant Simpson was third at 75. Kennedy’s top finisher, senior Harrison Moore, also tied Simpson for third.

Iowa City High put three golfers in the top 10 en route to its team total of 311, while Kennedy (312) and Xavier (313) placed two each. And that was the difference.

Botkin claims Cougars' only win against CF

Hannah Botkin claimed Kennedy's only win, swimming to victory in the 50 freestyle, and the Cougars were swamped by Cedar Falls, 122-64, Tuesday in a girls swimming meet at Kennedy.

Botkin won the 50 in 26.09 seconds.

Kennedy claimed seven second-place finishes. Cedar Falls swept the top three spots in two events.

Cougars finish 2-2 at Valley volleyball meet

WEST DES MOINES - The Cedar Rapids Kennedy volleyball team posted a 2-2 record against tough competition at the West Des Moines Valley tournament on Saturday to tie for third place.

The Cougars (3-5) defeated Class 4A second-ranked Harlan, 21-18, 12-21, 15-12 in their first match and followed with a 21-13, 21-14 conquest of Des Moines Roosevelt.

Kennedy lost to Class 5A second-ranked Ankeny in the semifinals, 21-11, 22-21, then fell to Class 5A fourth-ranked Dowling in the consolation match for third place, 25-14, 25-15.

Kennedy is ranked No. 9 in Class 5A and has faced a steady diet of ranked teams this season.

 

Prairie's Harper goes crazy against Kennedy

Crazy, crazy, crazy.

How else to describe a football game that featured 74 points, 794 total yards, 40 first downs and a stunning 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown?

One word. Crazy.

Prairie senior DeMetrius Harper caught 13 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns, and added the kickoff return for a score that led the Hawks past Kennedy, 41-33, Friday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference non-divisional game at Kingston Stadium.

Cougars nip City High in golf

Conner Koberg tied for medalist honors with a 2-over-par 38 Thursday as Kennedy trimmed Iowa City High for top honors at a Mississippi Valley Conference triangular golf meet at Ellis Park.

The Cougars nipped the Little Hawks, 156-157. Waterloo East finished a distant third at 220.

Harrison Moore and Ross Grekoff finished at 3-over 39 for Kennedy.
