Kennedy High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Lloyd tames Lions; No.1 Cougars reach finals

Adam Lloyd did not see Linn-Mar score 15 runs against Jefferson in the Bob Vrbicek Metro Baseball Tournament Monday night, but he heard about it.

It didn't faze him a bit.

Lloyd tossed a two-hitter Tuesday night as top-ranked Kennedy tamed the Lions, 12-2, in five innings in the semifinals at the Linn-Mar Field.

The Cougars (2-0) will face Prairie (2-0) in the championship game Wednesday at approximately 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Linn-Mar (1-1) will meet Xavier (1-1) in the third place game at the stadium at 5 p.m.

Cougars wax Waterloo West in girls soccer

WATERLOO -- Kaela Dickerman and Emily Feltes scored three goals apiece to lead No. 8 Kennedy to a 10-0 out of Waterloo West in a girls soccer game Tuesday at Waterloo.

Hannah Palomo scored two goals, and Marcie Christiansen and Jordan Holmes had a goal apiece for the Cougars.

Kennedy closed out the regular season 12-4 overall and 10-3 in the Mississippi Valley Conference. The Cougars finished second in the Mississippi Division, one game behind Linn-Mar.

Kennedy honors Hutcheson, Strait, Jahlas

Allie Hutcheson, Courtney Strait and Josh Jahlas have been named the Athletes of the Year at Kennedy High School.

Hutcheson has excelled in volleyball and soccer with the Cougars. She was named to the Iowa All-State Elite Team in volleyball this past season and helped Kennedy finish third at the state tournament for the third straight year.

Hutcheson, a goal keeper in soccer, has set school records for shutouts and fewest goals allowed. She is the 2012 Kennedy valedictorian with a 4.247 GPA and will attend the University of Northern Colorado on a full volleyball scholarship. She was academic all-state in both sports.

Strait was named first team all-state in basketball this past season and led Class 4A in scoring at 20.7 points per game during the regular season. She also was named the Athlete of the Year in the Mississippi Valley Conference and the Metro.

Strait has been the starting shortstop for the Kennedy softball team, ran on the track team and has received academic awards. She will attend Truman State on a basketball scholarship.

Jahlas has been a team captain in football, basketball and track at Kennedy also plays on the baseball team. He was named first team all-state in football and will play in the Iowa Shrine Bowl this summer.

Jahlas is a class salutatorian with a 4.1 GPA and has been named academic all-state. He ran at the state track meet and in the Drake Relays, helping the Cougars finish third in the shuttle hurdle relay at Drake this year. He will be joining the Iowa State football program as a preferred walk-on.

No. 1 Cougars, Lions headed for early showdown

The Kennedy Cougars are ranked No. 1 and the Linn-Mar Lions look like they have the ingredients to make a run for the top as well this year.

They'll clash Tuesday in the semifinals of the Bob Vrbicek Metro Baseball Tournament at the Linn-Mar diamond at approximately 7 p.m.

Alex Hayden struck out 14 batters as the top-ranked Cougars blanked Washington, 4-0, in the opening game of the tournament Monday night to spoil Tony Lombardi's debut as the new head coach of the Warriors.

Linn-Mar scored 11 runs in the first inning against Jefferson and pounded the J-Hawks, 15-2, in five innings in the nightcap.

Warriors claim state tennis win over Kennedy

The girls tennis meet Monday between Cedar Rapids Washington and Kennedy was billed as the first round of the state team tournament.

But with the competition at Jefferson and just the two teams and their fans on hand, it didn't really have a state tournament atmosphere.

"The first round always feels weird," Washington senior Katie Hammond said. "It doesn't really feel like state until you get down to Iowa City."

The Warriors are headed back to Iowa City after dispatching the Cougars, 5-0, in a Class 2A state tournament quarterfinal. The final four play June 2 at the University of Iowa, the day after the two-day singles and doubles state competition.

Kennedy girls make state tennis tourney

It wasn’t exactly the way Kennedy’s Sarah Lasecki wanted to prepare for the state team tennis tournament, but at least she’ll be there with her team and with a doubles partner for the third straight year.

Although she lost both her singles and doubles matches in the regional finals against Linn-Mar on the Kennedy courts Saturday afternoon, Lasecki’s teammates picked up the slack.

They combined to topple the Lions, 5-3, in the Class 2A regional final to advance to the state team tournament for the fourth straight year and the 10th time in the last 13 years. The Cougars (13-3) have been to the state semifinals eight times during that stretch.

Kennedy will play Washington in a first round state meet match Monday at 3 p.m. at Jefferson.

Kennedy ousted by Clinton in substate semis

The entire Linn-Mar boys tennis team mobbed the center court at Jefferson Saturday afternoon and piled on senior Tyler McCann after his singles win cinched a trip to the state team championship in Urbandale.

For the Lions, it will be the first time at the tourney in 24 years. They won the meet the last time they played in 1988. And while they’ve won the MVC division title four years in a row, up to now they fell one win short of making it to state.

“It’s fitting that Tyler was the one that clinched it for us,” said Linn-Mar Coach Chris Wundram. “He’s been a three-time state qualifier (in doubles), but this is his first time with the team.”

Kennedy duo 2nd in regional tennis

BETTENDORF -- Linn-Mar's Gabi Botsford finished second in singles and the Kennedy doubles team of Sarah Lasecki and Lindsay Minder were second in doubles Thursday in a Class 2A singles and doubles regional girls tennis tournament.

Rachel Herman of Davenport Central beat Botsford, 7-6(5), 7-5, in the singles final.

Herman ousted the Lions' Ashley Smith, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3), in the semifinals. Smith defaulted in the third-place match.

Dickerman boots Cougars past Wash, 2-0

The Kennedy and Washington defenses were seemingly impenetrable. Through 20 minutes of a girls soccer game between the Cougars and the Warriors, it was scoreless, and the teams combined for only five shots on goal.

There were few signs of offense.

That was until Kennedy’s Kaela Dickerman got her feet on the ball. Dickerman booted a goal with five minutes left in the first half, helping No. 8 Kennedy defeat Washington 2-0 Thursday night at Kingston Stadium.

'Max goal' sends Warriors past Kennedy boys

Sometimes practice does make perfect.
