Kennedy High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Koberg paces Cougars to CRANDIC title

The Kennedy golf team has split vision these days.

The Cougars are keeping one eye on the courses they keep conquering and one eye on the calendar.

The Cougars captured another title Monday when they won the CRANDIC championship in the searing heat at the Gardner Golf Course, but they can't help thinking about the district meet Oct. 8 and the state meet Oct. 11-12.

Hall led a powerful Kennedy rushing attack with 99 yards on 13 carries. Miles Moa added 91 yards and Logan Wedo 79 yards as the Cougars ground it out, especially when it mattered the most, to improve to 2-0.

"We weren't going to let them stop our run game," Hall said. "We were going to pound it down their throat. That's what we do. That's what we work on in practice. It pays off."

Freshmen star for Cougars, Lions in pool

Brooke Timmerman, a talented freshman, drives 20 miles every day from Atkins to Cedar Rapids so she can attend Kennedy High School and swim for the Cougars.

Jennifer Jenks, another freshman, has been known as "Stephanie's Little Sister" much of her life, but she's another talented member of the family and a top-notch swimmer for the Linn-Mar Lions.

The two ninth graders grabbed the headlines Tuesday night as Kennedy trimmed Linn-Mar, 110-76, in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet at the Kennedy pool.

Timmerman lives in the Benton Community school district, but the Bobcats do not have a swimming team. She has a school driver's permit and happily commutes to northeast Cedar Rapids every day, although she's still getting accustomed to a bigger school.

"It's scary," she said. "There are so many people and it's hard to get through the halls. I avoid crowds of people and take the back route."

Timmerman took the front route in the pool Tuesday and captured the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. She also swam on the triumphant 200 medley relay.

Jacobus helps Cougars trim Warriors

Kennedy quarterback Derek Jacobus made up for lost time Friday night, leading the Cougars to a 14-10 victory over Cedar Rapids Washington at Kingston Stadium.

It was the first season-opening win for Kennedy since 2008, and it was engineered by a player who missed the entire 2012 campaign.

Jacobus sat out last fall with a shoulder injury he suffered during the pre-season while working as a receiver.
