Seven Metro athletes all-state in girls soccer

Seven Metro athletes have been named first team all-state in girls soccer by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.

There were two athletes each from Kennedy and Linn-Mar, and three from Xavier.

Kaela Dickerman and Tory Harman of Kennedy, Jensen Sevening and Olivia Garcia of Linn-Mar were named to the Class 3A first team.

Kayla Armstrong, Sammi Shepard and Sarah Chicchelly were named to the Class 2A first team.

Armstrong, Harman top MVC soccer athletes

A pair of Metro athletes earned Athlete of the Year honors in girls soccer in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Kayla Armstrong of Xavier was top athlete in the Valley Division and Tory Harman of Kennedy earned the same honor in the Mississippi Division.

Armstrong led Xavier to its eighth straight state title. Harman's Kennedy team finished one game away from a state berth.

Cougars split a pair at Jesup

JESUP - Kennedy split a pair of games Saturday at the Jesup softball tournament.

The Cougars pounded Wapsie Valley, 13-3, then dropped a 6-5 decision to Waterloo East.

Kennedy (5-7) rapped out 17 hits against Wapsie Valley.

Daniels spins gem for Kennedy

Sophomore Zach Daniels pitched a strong game Friday to help the Kennedy Cougars split a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader with Dubuque Senior at the Kennedy field.

Daniels allowed only two hits in six innings as Kennedy won the nightcap, 9-0. David King pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning for the Cougars.

Dubuque Senior won the opener, 6-3.

Andrew Johnson went 2-for-2, scored two runs, drove in three runs and had two stolen bases in the second game for Kennedy (3-7, 2-5). Derek Jacobus also drove in three runs for the Cougars. Brock Skow had two hits.

Kubovec hits gives Cougars sweep

Lauren Kubovec's one-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Kennedy to a 5-4 win over Dubuque Wahlert and a sweep of their Mississippi Valley Conference softball doubleheader at Kennedy.

Heather McKinnon had a double and home run in the opener and led the Cougars (3-5, 3-5) to a 3-1 win.

McKinnon also had a double in the second game. It advanced Tanner Rathjens, who had singled, to third base with one out in the seventh. Kubovec followed with her game-winning hit.

Lasecki, Pedersen top all-Metro tennis

Sarah Lasecki and Jessica Pedersen of Kennedy High School were unanimous first-team selections on the 2013 All-Metro Women's Tennis Team.

They were joined on the first team by Allison Jasper of Xavier, Kristin King of Washington, Lilly Hartman of Washington and Ashley Smith of Linn-Mar.

Lindsay Dunkirk of Xavier was named the Metro Coach of the Year.

Cougars gain split despite Spencer's 3 HRs

Jaclyn Spencer hit three home runs, including a grand slam, to lead Waterloo West to a 14-3 pasting of Kennedy in the first game of a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader Tuesday night at Kennedy.

Kennedy won the nightcap, 7-1.

Tanner Rathjens had two hits and drove in two runs in the opener for Kennedy (1-5, 1-5).

Rathjens also had two hits in the nightcap. Erin Coker drove in two runs.

Taylor Sohn scattered nine hits struck out six to pick up the win.

Butz helps Prairie 'dodge' Kennedy

Cedar Rapids Prairie senior Tyler Butz hurt his right shoulder this spring playing prom dodgeball.

True story. Prom dodgeball.

Butz is almost fully recovered now and played a major role Tuesday as the Hawks spanked Kennedy, 7-3, to beat the struggling Cougars on back-to-back nights.

Butz went 3-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and a sacrifice bunt. He also played a solid game at second base, although he's itching to return to third base once his right shoulder is back to normal.

Prairie pitchers baffle Kennedy in 5-2 win

Spencer "Wild Thing" Dean got his nickname at Prairie High School the last few years when he had trouble throwing strikes in ballgames.

It used to be an insult. Now it's a compliment, because Spencer "Wild Thing" Dean is pitching very well for the Hawks this season.

"I don't mind it," he said Monday night. "Maybe last year it might have bothered me when I was having a rough game, but this year I've been pitching pretty well and helping the team out.

"I just laugh when I hear it now. It's pretty entertaining."

Dean pitched the seventh inning and got the save Monday as Prairie clipped the error-prone Kennedy Cougars, 5-2, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Prairie.

West counter stuns Cougars, 1-0

Out of an 80-minute one-sided soccer skirmish, all it took was 10 seconds Monday night at Kingston Stadium to end the Kennedy girls’ season and send Iowa City West to the state tournament.

The Cougars held possession of the ball practically all night but were unable to punch through West’s impenetrable defense around the goal.

And in one of the very few times the Women of Troy came close to scoring, they had the ball flop free right in front of the net with 9:24 to go and pushed it in for a 1-0 victory in a Class 3A regional final.
