Gibbs granted 6th year by NCAA

Creighton University basketball player Grant Gibbs  was granted a sixth year of collegiate eligibility by the NCAA on Tuesday.

Gibbs, a 6-foot-5 guard, prepped at Linn-Mar. He is a two-year starter for the Bluejays, who are 57-14 with him in the lineup. He led the Missouri Valley Conference in assists the past two seasons.

Gibbs averaged 8.5 points, 5.8 assists and 4.1 rebounds last season. He and Syracuse's Michael Carter-Williams were the only two players in the nation with at least 300 points, 200 assists and 145 rebounds.

Kahler honored by high school golf association

Steve Kahler of Linn-Mar High School will be inducted into the Iowa High School Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame at the state clinic in Ames next March.

Kahler enjoyed a distinguished career as the boys golf coach at Linn-Mar for 28 years and the girls coach for 10 years. He retired after the 2012-13 school year as a teacher and coach at the school.

The IHSGCA announced the honor Monday.

 

Lions and Cougars split in softball

In a softball battle between buddies Monday night, it came out even.

Linn-Mar pitcher Alexis Kelsey had scouted best friend Ashley Hamilton’s Kennedy team last week and said she knew exactly how to throw to them.

“They weren’t hitting the outside pitch,” Kelsey said after tossing a three-hitter in a 7-0 romp over the Cougars in the first game of a doubleheader Monday at Linn-Mar.

Hamilton, though, had two of those hits. And she came back with three more in the nightcap to lead Kennedy to a 3-1 payback win.

Lions deal Clinton a loss

Brandt Ollinger had two hits and drove in two runs to lead Linn-Mar to a 4-1 win over Clinton in a non-conference baseball game Saturday at Linn-Mar.

Jimmy Roth laso had an RBI double for the Lions (17-12).

Justin Wyant pitched five innings for the win. Austin Stroschein pitched the final two innings and earned a save.

Jenks takes 2nd at triathlon in Brazil

Stephanie Jenks will have some incredible stories to tell her Spanish class at Linn-Mar High School this fall.

Jenks, the 15-year-old phenom from Iowa, placed second in an international field of 54 contestants at the Pan American Triathlon Championships in Brazil Saturday morning in the Junior Elite Female division, competing against women from all over the world in the 16-to-19 age group.

Jenks qualified for the world championships that will be held in London, England this September.
