Linn-Mar errors gift-wrap Saints sweep

There was a mini-celebration around the dugout after Cedar Rapids Xavier's softball sweep over visiting Linn-Mar at Bob Erusha Field.

The Saints and their fans broke out in song, singing "Happy Birthday" to Xavier Coach Nikki Price.

Ironically, Price and her team got more than their share of gifts from the Lions during the games. Linn-Mar committed seven errors in the two games and a pop fly that dropped for a hit on what would have been the final out, led to a nine-run first-inning explosion the propelled the Saints to a 13-1 win in three innings in Game 1.

The nightcap was much more competitive, but two crucial errors led to three Xavier runs as the Saints won, 5-2.

Wyant, Stroschein toss Lions by J-Hawks

Justin Wyant and Austin Stroschein will be leaving for college later this summer and the next step in their baseball careers, but they'd like to help the Linn-Mar Lions make a return trip to the Class 4A state tournament before they leave.

Wyant and Stroschein took steps in that direction with good pitching performances Wednesday night as Linn-Mar swept a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader from Jefferson, 13-7 and 6-3, at the Linn-Mar complex.

Wyant allowed only one run in five innings in the opener in sweltering conditions, then Stroschein went the distance and threw 100 pitches in the nightcap.

Kuch hurls Prairie by Linn-Mar

As the saying goes, it’s always best to dance with the girl that brung ya.

After dropping three of four games in the very tough Clear Creek Amana softball tournament over the weekend, interim Prairie coach Lynette Stecklein put pitching ace Katie Kuch on the mound for both games Tuesday night at home against Linn-Mar.

The seasoned senior came through with two wins, 9-2 and 7-0.
