Linn-Mar High School - Marion, Iowa

Ramlo's goal lifts Saints by Lions

Connor Ramlo scored in the third minute of the game Thursday as the Xavier Saints blanked Linn-Mar, 1-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys soccer game on a cold, wet night at Linn-Mar.

Ramlo received a pass from Isaac Frisch, eluded a Linn-Mar defender and booted the ball into the low right corner of the goal.

Xavier is ranked No.1 in Class 2A and Linn-Mar is ranked No.7 in Class 3A.

Both teams had scoring opportunities as the game proceeded, but neither team found the net in the next 77 minutes.

Lions primed for 2013 campaign

Linn-Mar is coming off a 29-11 season that saw them make an appearance in the Class 4A state tournament. With a quality core of pitching returning, we can expect to see a strong Linn-Mar team again this season.

Graduated from last season’s club are pitchers Jake Stolley (7-1) and Keaton Blackford (2-3). Also not participating for the Lions is Nate Greve (7-3), who is playing travel ball before heading to Barry  University in Florida.

That accounts for 16 wins and 140 innings that will have to be accounted for by the returning staff.

Also gone from last year is outfielder Michael Redmond, whose .366 average was second only to Greve’s .383. Redmond also provided overall leadership that will be missed.

Xavier girls pin 1st goal and loss on Lions

Neither wind nor rain nor bitter cold could keep two of the best of the state’s girls soccer teams from their appointed round ball matchup Thursday night.

As it turned out, the game was won after it barely started when Xavier all-stater Kayla Armstrong scored on a rocket kick at the 38:03 mark of the first to give her team a 1-0 lead.

For the next 78 minutes, the Saints and the visiting Lions of Linn-Mar battled back and forth to a standstill.

“It was basically like a boxing match,“ said Linn-Mar Coach Steve Dickinson, whose previously undefeated and unscored upon squad on Thursday climbed from three to two in Class 3A poll.
