Linn-Mar High School - Marion, Iowa

Evans snaps 1600 mark at Ask Relays

Linn-Mar's Josh Evans has been working his way back slowly after suffering leg and back injuries at the end of the cross country season.

He was limited to one event at Saturday's 54th edition of the John Ask Relays on a windy, rainy afternoon at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids. But the junior made the most of that event, breaking a mark that had stood since 1978.

Evans dueled for three laps of the 1600-meter run with Iowa City West's Bailey Wetherell before breaking away over the final 400 meters to win in 4 minutes, 23.90 seconds. The time broke the old meet standard of 4:24.5 set by Waterloo East's Todd Paverill in 1978, and it was a surprise to Evans.

"I thought I was running slower than that," he said. "With the wind blowing and my legs kinda burning I didn't think I would be able to run a 4:23. I thought I was in the 4:25-4:26 range."

Florida Gulf Coast, UNI looking at Lassen

IOWA CITY -- Matt Lassen has developed a special interest in Florida Gulf Coast during the NCAA men's basketball tournament, but it has nothing to do with his bracket for March Madness.

Florida Gulf Coast, which has stunned the college basketball world by reaching the Sweet 16 of the tournament, is recruiting Lassen and has invited the Linn-Mar senior to visit the campus in Fort Myers, Fla., once they are done playing.

The University of Northern Iowa also wants Lassen to visit once the Panthers are finished playing in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.

Lassen, a 6-foot-5 swingman, originally committed to Albany (N.Y.), but changed his mind in February and began looking for a different school.

"Two days after I de-committed from Albany, I got a call from Florida Gulf Coast. And now they're blowing up the tournament," Lassen said Wednesday after playing in the Eastern Iowa All-Star Game in Iowa City. "Pretty ironic."

Until then, Lassen had never heard of Florida Gulf Coast.

Jenks, J-Hawks double up at Dickinson Relays

CEDAR FALLS - Stephanie Jenks ran 15 laps around the UNI-Dome track Monday at the A.D. Dickinson Relays, took one deep breath and then waited for the rest of the girls in the 3000 meter run to cross the finish line so she could shake their hands.

The Linn-Mar freshman had to wait a while to greet them all.

Jenks won the 3000 in 10:16.27 in a breeze. She clocked a 9:49.24 at the same distance last week at a major meet in Ames when she faced serious competition from Anna Holidman of Waverly-Shell Rock, but there wasn't much of a challenge Monday.

Jenks wins 3000 at ISU Classic

AMES - Linn-Mar freshman Stephanie Jenks won the 3000 meter run at the 2013 Iowa State High School Girls Classic indoor track meet Monday.

Jenks and Waverly-Shell Rock senior Anna Holdiman waged a neck-and-neck battle for much of the race before Jenks broke away with about 200 meters remaining.

Jenks, who won the Class 4A state cross country title last fall, was clocked in 9:49.24. Holdiman finished second in 9:53.36 in a field of 56 runners.
