Lions finish in tie for MVC mat title

WATERLOO - Linn-Mar whipped Xavier and Waterloo East on Thursday night to finish in a first-place tie with Prairie in the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division.

The Lions (26-7, 12-1) zapped Xavier 58-13 and blanked East, 70-0.

Linn-Mar had six pins against Xavier. Damon Griffin (126), Joel Northrup (145), Dakota Digmann (160), Andrew Holladay (182), Sam Nowak (195) and Justin Green (220) had falls against the Saints.

Linn-Mar boys bowlers move to 9-0

Dreyson Robe shot games of 241 and 210 for a 451 series that led Linn-Mar past Kennedy, 3084-2921, Thursday afternoon in boys bowling at Cedar Rapids Bowl.

Linn-Mar ran its record to 9-0.

Linn-Mar's Trent Jochimsen shot high game with a 258. The Lions' Colby Frye shot a 247.

Doug Svoboda and Kyle Custer shared series honors for Kennedy at 399. Custer shot the Cougars' high game with a 216.

Lassen will not play ball at Albany

Linn-Mar senior Matt Lassen has changed his mind and will not play Division I basketball at the State University of New York at Albany, according to a story by Iowa Prep Sports Thursday.

Lassen committed to Albany last season as a junior. He did not sign a national letter-of-intent with Albany this past November, but recently told the Metro Sports Report he planned to sign with Albany this spring.

Lassen, a 6-foot-5 guard, told Iowa Prep Sports that he's decided he wants to play college basketball closer to home.

Lassen is averaging 12 points per game and scored 20 in a 70-50 victory over Kennedy Tuesday night.

   

Jenks sisters honored by USA Triathlon

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Stephanie and Jennifer Jenks have been named All-Americans for 2012 by USA Triathlon, the organization announced Wednesday.

Stephanie Jenks, a freshman at Linn-Mar High School, won the Class 4A state cross country title this year and is one of the top young triathletes in the country.

Jennifer Jenks is an eighth grader in the Linn-Mar school system and will be joining her older sister at Linn-Mar High School for the 2013-14 school year.

The Jenks sisters were named Female Youth Elite All-Americans in the 13-15 age group.

 

Northrup collects 2 technical falls for Lions

Joel Northrup won both of his matches by technical fall Tuesday night as the Linn-Mar Lions swept a double-dual wrestling meet in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Northrup posted an 18-2 technical fall over Ali Al-Mabuk as the Lions defeated Cedar Falls, 36-17. He scored an 18-3 technical fall over Dallas Slater as the Lions rolled by Iowa City High, 56-16.

Northrup is ranked No.1 at 145 pounds in Class 3A with a 46-0 record.

Damon Griffin collected two pins for Linn-Mar at 126 pounds.
