Linn-Mar High School - Marion, Iowa

No. 4 Cougars, No. 9 Lions on collision course

If you like girls basketball, you might want to circle Tuesday, Jan. 5 on your calendar as a "must see" game for the New Year.

The Kennedy Cougars will host the Linn-Mar Lions that night at 7:30 in a showdown for early bragging rights in the Metro area. Kennedy is ranked No. 4 in Class 5A with a 9-1 record, while Linn-Mar is ranked No. 9 in Class 5A with a 6-1 mark.

The Cougars feature a strong 1-2 punch with Lela Sellers and sharpshooter Sydney Hayden, while the Lions counter with a strong 1-2 punch of their own with Amanda Ollinger and Kamryn Finley.

All four of those athletes will play Division I sports in college. Sellers has signed with Liberty University for basketball, Hayden is headed to the University of Northern Iowa for soccer, Ollinger has signed with Iowa for basketball and Finley, just a sophomore, already has basketball offers from Northern Iowa and Drake.

Ollinger leads the Metro in scoring and ranks third in rebounding, while Sellers leads the Metro in rebounding and ranks second in scoring.

Anderson commits to Denver volleyball

Linn-Mar junior Ellie Anderson plans to continue her successful volleyball career at the University of Denver, which is an NCAA Division I school.

Anderson announced her decision Thursday on her social media account.

Anderson, 5-foot-8, helped Linn-Mar compile a 28-9 record this season. She finished ninth in Class 5A with 803 assists and was honored as a first-team selection on the Mississippi Valley Conference team.

Anderson also had 228 digs, 117 kills, 47 aces and 21 blocks.

 

Bohannon wins Metro Spotlight Award

Jordan Bohannon of Linn-Mar is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Bohannon, a senior, put on a remarkable performance Friday night when the Linn-Mar basketball team defeated Cedar Rapids Prairie in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Linn-Mar.

Bohannon popped in nine 3-pointers and scored a career-best 40 points with a sensational display of outside shooting. He broke his brother Jason's school record for most 3-pointers in a single game and tied for the second-most 3-pointers in Metro history.

L-M swimmers take 2nd at Clinton

CLINTON - The Linn-Mar boys swimming team placed second at the Holiday Classic in Clinton Saturday.

The Lions captured the 200 freestyle relay with Matt Peng, Brycen Snell, Matthew Mather and Reid Snell clocked in 1:31.77.

Hogan Myers finished second in the 200 free (1:50.97) and 500 free (4:59.32). Peng placed second in the 50 free (22.57) and the 100 fly (54.83). Reid Snell was the runner-up in the 200 IM (2:10.07).

Linn-Mar finished third in the 400 freestyle relay.

Dubuque Senior won the team championship.

Linn-Mar wins title at Prairie bowling

The Linn-Mar Lions topped Davenport North, 2-0, in the championship match of the Prairie Baker boys bowling tournament Saturday at Lancer Lanes.

Jefferson defeated Kennedy, 2-1, in the consolation match for third place.

Linn-Mar was seeded third for the playoffs, but the Lions bumped off Iowa City in the quarterfinals and beat No. 2 seed Jefferson in the semifinals before upending top-seeded Davenport North in the finals.

Sixteen teams competed in the event.
