Davis nets 5 TDs as Lions drub Wahlert

DUBUQUE - Rhys Davis sat on the bench last year as Linn-Mar's third-string quarterback and watched Mark Atwater steer the Lions to the Mississippi Valley Conference title.

Davis is the starting quarterback now and he looked a lot like Atwater Friday night when the Lions faced Dubuque Wahlert at the Rock Bowl in Dubuque.

Better yet, he played like Atwater.

Davis ran for three touchdowns and passed for two others as Linn-Mar drubbed the crippled Golden Eagles, 49-6, to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Evans, Jenks stay No. 1 in cross country ratings

Linn-Mar junior Josh Evans stayed in the No. 1 spot in the Class 4A cross country rankings Wednesday despite missing two races with a sore leg.

Linn-Mar freshman Stephanie Jenks also remained in the No. 1 spot in the Class 4A poll after winning a three-mile race in Aurora, Ill., last Saturday by 43 seconds.

Evans has not raced since winning the Heartland Classic in Ames on Sept. 15. He described his break from racing as "precautionary" and does not think the injury is serious.

Fitzgerald paces Linn-Mar swimmers

IOWA CITY - Samantha Fitzgerald won four events Tuesday as Linn-Mar defeated Iowa City High and Vinton-Shellsburg/Union in a double-dual swimming meet at the Mercer Park pool.

Fitzgerald captured the 50 freestyle and 500 freestyle races. She also swam on the triumphant medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.

Lizzie Adams, Paige Broghammer and Stephanie Jenks were triple winners for the Lions.

Shipley named Linn-Mar softball coach

Mike Shipley, an assistant baseball coach at Linn-Mar High School for 13 years, has been named the new head softball coach at the school.

Shipley coached the sophomore baseball team from 2009 until this past season. He also worked with the varsity and freshman teams in previous years.

Shipley succeeds Jon Harms, who resigned as softball coach.

Lions finish 2-2 at Monticello volleyball

MONTICELLO - The Linn-Mar Lions compiled a 2-2 record at the Monticello volleyball tournament on Saturday.

The Lions defeated Marquette (22-20, 21-18) and trimmed DeWitt Central (21-15, 12-21, 18-16).

Linn-Mar lost to Maquoketa (21-12, 21-16) and fell to Davenport Assumption (25-10, 25-17).
