Stolley on IHSBCA all-state 1st team

Alex Hayden capped a brilliant season for the Kennedy High School baseball team Thursday by being named to the 2012 All-State "Super Team" by the Iowa High chool Baseball Coaches Association.

Eleven Metro players were selected for the all-state teams by the IHSBCA, a testament to the talent in the Metro area this year.

Hayden was named as a utility player on the "Super Team," an elite unit that honors the top 15 players in the state, regardless of classification. He compiled an 11-2 record on the mound with a 0.99 ERA, hit .386 with 28 RBIs and excelled at second base.

Cody Bell of Kennedy, Josh Jahlas of Kennedy, Jason Velvick of Prairie, Brennan Hammer of Prairie and Jake Stolley of Linn-Mar were named first team all-state in Class 4A.

Harms resigns as Linn-Mar softball coach

Jon Harms has resigned as the softball coach at Linn-Mar High School, the school announced Monday morning.

Harms had been the head coach at Linn-Mar since 2007. The Lions placed fourth at the Class 4A state tournament in 2007 and finished fifth in 2008.

Harms was an assistant at Linn-Mar from 2003 to 2006.

The Lions compiled a 20-18 record this season.

 

Metro stars lead East at IHSBCA game

CLINTON -- Jake Stolley of Linn-Mar was the winning pitcher Friday as the Large Schools East team trimmed the Large Schools West, 5-3, on the second day of the IHSBCA All-Star games in Clinton.

Devon Jacobus of Kennedy went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Alex Hayden of Kennedy was 2-for-2. Both Cougars scored a run.

The Large Schools East team lost to Small Schools East, 7-1, on Thursday and carries a 1-1 record into Saturday's action.

Small Schools East edged Small Schools West, 4-2, Friday and has a 2-0 record. The Large Schools West squad is 0-2.

Linn-Mar sweeps all-sports title in Mississippi Division

The Linn-Mar Lions have been crowned the all-sports champions in the Mississippi Division of the Mississippi Valley Conference for the 2011-2012 school year.

The Linn-Mar boys won Mississippi Division titles in cross country, football, wrestling, basketball, tennis and baseball and won the overall division title with 64 points.

The Linn-Mar girls captured Mississippi Division crowns in cross country, golf and soccer and claimed the overall division title with 49.5 points.

Points were awarded on a 7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis in each sport, with the champion getting seven points.

Washington and Iowa City High tied for second place in the Mississippi Division boys standings with 50 points. Kennedy and Dubuque Wahlert tied for second place in the Mississippi Division girls standings with 45.5 points.

Iowa City West captured first place in the Valley Division standings for boys and girls.

Hayden, Jacobus, Stolley named IHSBCA all-stars

Alex Hayden of Kennedy, Devon Jacobus of Kennedy and Jake Stolley of Linn-Mar have been selected to play in the 2012 IHSBCA All-Star Series in Clinton on Aug. 2-5 as members of the Large Schools East Squad.

Hayden compiled an 11-2 record as Kennedy's top pitcher. He hit .400 and was also the team's starting second baseman.

Jacobus hit cleanup most of the season for the Cougars as they compiled a 33-7 record and reached the semifinals of the Class 4A state tournament. He was Kennedy's top third baseman and played second base when Hayden was pitching.

Stolley compiled a 7-2 record for Linn-Mar and helped the Lions reach the state tournament. He also played first base.

The IHSBCA all-star games will be played in Clinton at the Ashford University Field, home of the Midwest League's Clinton LumberKings.
