Ollinger shines as Lions sweep Hawks

Kortlan Ollinger had a big day at the plate Thursday as the Linn-Mar Lions swept a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader from Cedar Rapids Prairie, 7-4 and 5-2, at Linn-Mar.

Ollinger went 6-for-8 in the twinbill with a triple, home run and three RBIs for the Lions (18-17, 13-11).

Ollinger, Maggie Rizor and Georgia Kolf were 3-for-4 for Linn-Mar in the first game. Kelsey Duggan and Alexis Kelsey had two hits as the Lions unleashed a 15-hit attack.

Lions take control of MVC race

Linn-Mar took sole possession of first place in the MVC Mississippi Division with a doubleheader sweep of Cedar Falls at home Wednesday night.

The Lions won the opener 5-2 after going ahead early but had to rally from a 6-0 deficit in the nightcap for a 9-8 comeback win.

The twin wins give them a 17-3 conference mark (22-8 overall) with a crucial double bill at Iowa City High Friday.  The Little Hawks split a doubleheader at Kennedy Wednesday, leaving both teams at 16-4 in the tight division race.

No. 8 Lions smack Waterloo East

The Linn-Mar Lions, the No. 8 team in the state according to the latest poll, did nothing to hurt their ranking Monday night as they hosted Waterloo East in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader.

The Lions put together 23 runs on 22 hits to go with quality pitching to defeat Waterloo East, 13-2 and 10-0, in a pair of five-inning games.

Nate Greve led the way in the first game, picking up three hits from his leadoff spot in the lineup and pitching a complete game with five hits and nine strikeouts.

Lechner gets 200th win as Lions sweep

Linn-Mar Coach Chad Lechner collected his 200th career victory Friday night as the 10th-ranked Lions swept a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader from Dubuque Wahlert, 5-0 and 8-3, at the Linn-Mar field.

Jake Stolley (4-1) pitched five innings of shutout ball for Linn-Mar in the opener with 11 strikeouts and only one walk. Nate Greve tossed two spotless innings in relief with four strikeouts, giving Linn-Mar hurlers 11 strikeouts. Austin Banks went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs.

Austin Stroschein (3-0) pitched five innings and allowed only two earned runs in the nightcap to get the victory with six strikeouts. Justin Wyant tossed two shutout innings in relief with three strikeouts. Stroschein helped himself by going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Greve and Kevin Bogert also had two hits.

Linn-Mar raised its records to 18-8 overall and 13-3 in the MVC.

Kelsey belts two homers as Lions sweep

DUBUQUE - Freshman Alexis Kelsey hit two home runs Thursday as the Linn-Mar Lions tripped Dubuque Wahlert, 11-9, in the first game of a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader in Dubuque.

The Lions also won the second game, 5-3.

Kelsey went 3-for-4 in the opener, scored four runs and collected five RBIs for Linn-Mar (13-14, 11-9). Maggie Rizor went 3-for-5 and drove in two runs. Cheyenne Hansen also drove in two runs and got the victory in relief.
