Linn-Mar High School - Marion, Iowa

Josh Evans is polite champion for Lions

IOWA CITY - Win or lose, Josh Evans likes to stay on the track after a race and congratulate all the other runners.

He usually wins, but that's not why he does it.

"We're all out here trying our best. It's what they deserve," he said Thursday. "It's just the right thing to do."

All the other runners needed to congratulate Evans, because the Linn-Mar sophomore won the 1600 and 3200 meter runs at the Class 4A state qualifying meet to assure himself a trip to Des Moines for the state finals next week.

Galbraith, Linn-Mar cop district tennis titles

Brotherly love stopped at the net on the Linn-Mar tennis courts Thursday as the Lions' doubles team led by senior Tyler McCann trounced kid brother Trevor’s duo, 6-1, 6-1, to claim a district championship.

Putting both of its doubles teams in the finals, however, helped propel Linn-Mar to the team title in the six-team Class 2A field.

In singles competition, Kennedy’s undefeated and top-seeded Riley Galbraith coasted to three lopsided wins for a return to the state tournament, May 25-26 at Veterans Memorial Tennis Center in Cedar Rapids.

Galbraith’s run powered the Cougars to the runner-up spot in the team standings. Dubuque Hempstead came in third.

Lions stay red-hot in rout of Washington

Linn-Mar boys tennis coach Chris Wundram apparently knew what he was doing when he kept his team at practice until almost 7:30 Friday night.

By then it was just getting dark, but it was even more cold and windy than it had been most of the day.

“I thought the weather was supposed to be the same way today,” Wundram said Saturday afternoon, after his red-hot Lions crushed Washington 8-1 on the Warriors' home courts. “I wanted the players to practice in those conditions. I thought they’d do better today.”
