Drake now swimming for Linn-Mar

Kelsey Drake, a two-time silver medalist at the 2013 girls state swimming meet, has transferred from Cedar Rapids Jefferson to Linn-Mar and is now competing for the Lions, according to an article in Tuesday's Gazette. Drake placed second in the 200 IM and second in the 100 butterly as a freshman at state last year.

Drake has moved into the Linn-Mar district and is eligible immediately.

She told The Gazette that she changed schools because her club team coach, Brian Ruffles, now works at the new Linn-Mar Aquatic Center. She said she also was attracted to Linn-Mar by its new facility.

 

Marion ranked 4th in volleyball poll

The Marion Indians have been ranked fourth in the Class 4A preseason volleyball poll, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union announced Monday.

Marion finished with a 25-16 record last season.

The Xavier Saints are ranked No. 10 in Class 4A. The Linn-Mar Lions are ranked No. 9 in Class 5A.

Harlan grabbed the No. 1 spot in the 4A rankings. Ankeny Centennial was voted No. 1 in Class 5A.

The other top-ranked clubs are Holy Trinity in Class 1A, Dike-New Hartford in Class 2A and Solon in Class 3A.

Waukee nips Kennedy at Hunters Ridge

The Waukee Warriors spoiled the day for the Kennedy Cougars and everyone else at the Linn-Mar Invitational golf tournament Monday at Hunters Ridge.

Tripp Kinney of Waukee fired a 3-under-par 69 to claim medalist honors and lead the Warriors to the team championship.

Waukee nipped Kennedy, 305-306, for the title.

Cole Murdock of Kennedy finished second in the individual standings with a2-over 74. The Cougars got a 75 from Conner Koberg and a 76 from Davis Sutton, but all their other golfers shot in the 80's.

Steph Jenks wins Metro Spotlight Award

Linn-Mar junior Stephanie Jenks is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Jenks captured the silver medal in the triathlon at the Youth Olympic Games Saturday in Nanjing, China, with a time of 1 hour, 33 seconds in the grueling swim, bike and run event.

The Youth Olympic Games are being covered on television, which showed the spectacular opening ceremony.

Jenks has become a world traveler in her running and triathlon career with trips to China, England, Brazil and Mexico. She also has competed all over the United States and will race in the ITU Junior World Triathlon in Edmonton, Canada Aug. 29.

Jenks takes 2nd at triathlon in China

NANJING, China - Linn-Mar junior Stephanie Jenks celebrated her 17th birthday in China Saturday by claiming the silver medal in the triathlon at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing.

Jenks was clocked in 1 hour and 33 seconds. Brittany Dutton of Australia won the event in 59 minutes, 56 seconds, beating Jenks by 37 seconds.

Emilie Morier of France was third in 1 hour and 55 seconds.

Jenks was timed in 10:26 in the .75 kilometer swim, 31:20 in the 20 kilometer bike race and 17:31 in the 5K run.

A total of 32 athletes from around the world competed in the event.
