Linn-Mar High School - Marion, Iowa

Daniels named captain of all-state team

Kennedy High School junior Zach Daniels has been named the captain of the Class 4A all-state baseball team by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Daniels had a sensational year for the Cougars as a pitcher, hitter and second baseman as Kennedy reached the state tournament.

Sammy Lizarraga of Kennedy and Spencer Van Scoyoc of Jefferson joined Daniels on the IHSBCA All-State Super Team, which is selected regardless of a school's class as 4A, 3A, 2A or 1A.

Manny Jeffery of Linn-Mar made the Class 4A second team.

Bryce Grimm of Xavier was named first team all-state in Class 3A.

Sutton fires 65 as Cougars win MVC title

WATERLOO - Davis Sutton and the Kennedy Cougars collected a resounding victory at the Mississippi Valley Conference Super Golf Meet at Gates Park in Waterloo Thursday.

Sutton fired a 7-under-65 to grab medalist honors and the Cougars won the conference title by 18 shots over Xavier.

Kennedy claimed four spots in the top-10 standings. Ross Grekoff was fifth with an even-par 72, Cole Murdock finished sixth at 73 and Conner Koberg was eighth with a 74.

Lions optimistic with Schmidt & Scott

Ryan Schmidt attended college football camps all over the country this summer to try and improve and possibly land a Division I scholarship.

Perrion Scott traveled to Mississippi for personal reasons, but he's back and determined to have a successful season as a senior. He's eligible and ready to run.

They are two of the big reasons the Linn-Mar Lions are "cautiously optimistic" they'll have a good season this year after suffering through a 2-and-7 campaign in 2013.

There's another reason Coach Bob Forsyth and his players like their chances. They have 33 seniors on the roster this year, compared to only 15 a year ago.

"We're getting great leadership from our seniors from that big group," Forsyth said Wednesday before practice. "They've been through some wars as juniors."

Scott listed on Linn-Mar football roster

Perrion Scott has battled injuries and academic problems during his sports career at Linn-Mar High School, but the speedster is currently listed on Linn-Mar's football roster on the IHSAA website.

Linn-Mar football coach Bob Forsyth and Linn-Mar athletic director Scott Mahmens declined comment on Scott's status with the team when contacted by the Metro Sports Report.

Scott was injured during much of the 2013 football season, but he showed what he can do when healthy when he rushed for 200 yards and two touchdowns against Xavier. He carried the ball 49 times for 305 yards and six touchdowns last year in six games.

Scott burst onto the scene as a sophomore at the Class 4A state track meet in 2013 when he helped Linn-Mar win the state title. He finished first in the 4x200 relay, second in the 200 meter dash, third in the 100 meter dash and third in the 4x100 relay.

Scott was academically ineligible for the 2013 track season as a junior.

If Scott is eligible to play football for Linn-Mar this season, it would greatly bolster the Lions following their 2-7 record in 2013.
