Kamin fires 1-under 35 for Wash

MJ Kamin of Cedar Rapids Washington made three birdies and fired a 1-under-par 35 Thursday to claim medalist honors in a Mississippi Valley Conference quadrangular meet at Gardner.

Kamin, who will play golf next year at Iowa State, collected birdies on the 2nd, 5th and 7th holes.

Teresa Lopez Moreno of Linn-Mar had an eagle-2 on the third hole to help the Lions nip Washington, 182-183, for team honors. Moreno finished with a 3-over 39.

No.2 Cougars nip No.4 Lions, 3-2

Mark Schulz scored two goals Thursday night as the second-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars trimmed No.4 Linn-Mar, 3-2, in a premier Mississippi Valley Conference boys soccer match at Linn-Mar.

Nikolas Newcamp also scored for Kennedy (2-1). Killian Magee, Jacob Sarasin, JJ Reinhart, Schulz and Reid Botkin collected assists for the Cougars.

Linn-Mar (6-1) took the lead in the 5th minute and again in the 13th minute, but Kennedy rallied each time.

Daniel Luzindya scored both of the goals for Linn-Mar.

The game was tied at halftime, 2-2.

McCrary, Hayek win titles for Linn-Mar

IOWA CITY — Curtis McCrary and Kyle Hayek won titles for the Linn-Mar Lions at the Forwald/Coleman Relays in Iowa City on Thursday.

McCrary sailed 21 feet, 10 3/4 inches to capture the long jump. Hayek won the shot put at 48 feet, 5 inches.

The Lions also captured the 4x400 relay with Dalton Gosch, Duggan Trenary, Greyson Dolezal and Joe A'Hearn.

Daniel Murphy finished second in the 1600 (4:23.65), and Tanner Rathje took second in the 3200 (9:40.27).

Iowa City High won the boys title with 121 points. Linn-Mar placed fourth out of eight teams with 70.5 points.

Amarri Waller of Kennedy finished third in the girls 100 meter dash in 12.94 seconds. Waukee won the team championship. The Cougars placed seventh.

4 Metro teams ranked in boys soccer

The four premier boys soccer teams in the Metro area are ranked 2-3-4-5 in the polls this week by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association (IAHSSCA).

The Xavier Saints are ranked No.2 in Class 2A. Kennedy is ranked No. 3, Linn-Mar is No. 4 and Washington is No. 5 in Class 3A, through matches of April 12.

Xavier fell from No. 1 to No. 2 in Class 2A. Norwalk replaced the Saints at the top of the rankings.

Kennedy remained No. 3 in Class 3A, but Linn-Mar and Washington traded spots in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots. Iowa City West is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, followed by Johnston.

Prairie dropped out of the 3A rankings this week.

Jenks blazes to victory in 3000

Linn-Mar sophomore Stephanie Jenks captured the 3000 meter run in 9 minutes, 35.69 seconds at the Linn-Mar Relays Tuesday, setting a personal record and establishing a new standard in the state this year.

The Lions won nine events at their own meet and won the championship with 155 points. Kennedy placed second out of eight teams with 105 points.

Amber Decker claimed the 400 (59.62), Hannah Saville took the 800 (2:28.23), Rachel Perry won the 200 (27.12) and Morgan Garcia captured the 1500 (5:09.65) for Linn-Mar. The Lions also won the 3200 relay (10:10.83), the distance medley (4:29.99), the sprint medley (1:53.44) and the 4x400 relay (4:10.32).

Morgan Martin won the discus for Kennedy (112-11) and Amarri Waller took the 100 (12.88). Xavier won the 800 relay (1:50.25).
