Jenks named All-American in triathlon

Linn-Mar High School sophomore Stephanie Jenks has been named a 2013 All-American by USA Triathlon in the Junior Elite division for girls 16 to 19 years old.

Jenks joined Tamara Gordon of Rapid City, S.D., and Devon Dabney of Atlanta on the All-America first team. Only three girls were honored.

Jenks represented the United States in two international triathlons last year.

Brooke McMorran 3rd at 2A state bowling

DES  MOINES - Brooke McMorran of Linn-Mar finished third in individual competition Tuesday at the Class 2A girls state bowling tournament at Plaza Lanes.

McMorran rolled games of 212 and 256 for a 468 series. She finished 12 pins behind winner Michaela Kelly of Bettendorf.

Amber Westemeier of Prairie finished 13th with a 407 series. Jefferson's Rylea Bennett tied for 14th at 405.

Prairie finished fourth in team competition. Jefferson was eighth.

Linn-Mar upset bid falls short, 52-50

MARSHALLTOWN - A basket by Waukee's Carlie Littlefield with 2.7 seconds left shot down the Linn-Mar girls basketball team's state tournament hopes Tuesday night.

The Lions were beaten by the fourth-ranked Warriors, 52-50, in a Class 5A regional final.

Katie Sommer scored 22 points to lead Linn-Mar (15-9). Kristie Sommer added 10 points.

Reilly Jacobson scored 15 points and Taylor Wingert 14 for Waukee (20-3).

Linn-Mar boys 9th at state bowling

The Prairie girls missed out on a top three finish by one pin Tuesday in the Class 2A state bowling tournament at Plaza Lanes.

Prairie turned in the best Baker round with a 1088 and finished in fourth place, one pin behind Muscatine. Waterloo West was champion and Bettendorf finished second.

The Jefferson girls were eighth.

Prairie's Amber Westemeier shot a 407 set in singles and Ashley Grady a 393. Jefferson was led by Rylea Bennett's 405 set.

Tearful Jeffery claims 120 state title

DES MOINES - Linn-Mar senior Alijah Jeffery rarely shows any emotion at a wrestling tournament, but he made an exception Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena to savor the best moment of his career.

Jeffery finished his perfect season Saturday with a 7-0 victory over Paul Glynn of Bettendorf in the Class 3A 120-pound finals to end the season as an undefeated state champion with a sparkling 41-0 record.

Jeffery raised his arms in celebration, saluted Linn-Mar fans in the sold-out arena, leaped into assistant coach Ryan Gotto's arms and was mobbed by happy teammates as he left the floor in tears.

"It's kind of overwhelming," he said a few minutes later. "It's hard to believe it finally happened."
