Linn-Mar claims Grinnell swim title

GRINNELL - The Linn-Mar Lions won nine out of 11 events Saturday and claimed the top prize at the Grinnell Invitational swimming meet.

"We had a fabulous meet," Linn-Mar Coach Tom Belin reported.

Zach Hendricks led the way for the Lions with four titles in the 200 medley relay, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.

Kyle McNeal, John Roggendorf, Justin Arebaugh and Calvin Greve were triple winners for Linn-Mar. Reid Snell claimed two title.

Jenks takes 9th at Foot Locker race

SAN DIEGO - Linn-Mar sophomore Stephanie Jenks placed ninth out of 40 runners at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships Saturday morning at Balboa Park in San Diego.

Tessa Barrett of Waverly, Pa., won the 5,000-meter race in 17 minutes, 16 seconds. Jenks finished 27 seconds later in 17:43.

Jenks finished second among all the high school sophomores that participated in the event. She was the highest finisher of the contestants from the Midwest Region.

 

Uhlir's 32 points lead Lions past No.6 SE Polk

PLEASANT HILL - Nic Uhlir dropped in six 3-pointers and scored 32 points to help Linn-Mar to a 67-63 overtime win Saturday over No.6 Southeast Polk in a non-conference boys basketball game.

Jordan Bohannon added 19 points for Linn-Mar (2-2).

There were 54 fouls called in the the game. Linn-Mar outscored Southeast Polk 24-21 at the free-throw line.

Carter Wright scored 21 points for Southeast Polk (4-1).

No.2 Little Hawks dispatch Linn-Mar girls

Haley Lorenzen scored 18 points and Courtney Joens 16 to lead No.2 Iowa City High past Linn-Mar, 68-46, Saturday afternoon in a girls basketball game at Linn-Mar.

Lorenzen and Joens combined to make 16 of 23 shots from two-point range. The Little Hawks shot 58 percent overall and were 71.4 percent from inside the arc.

Katie Sommer scored 13 points and twin sister Kristie had 11 for Linn-Mar. The Lions shot 33 percent overall and were 2 of 20 from 3-point range.

Sommer twins lead Lions by J-Hawks

For the Linn-Mar girls, Friday night was all about redemption.

They admittedly played poorly Tuesday in a 33-point loss at Kennedy and weren't about to let it happen again at home against Jefferson.

“We wanted to redeem ourselves,” said senior guard Kristie Sommer, who led the Lions with 21 points in a 65-49 victory over the J-Hawks.

“This is our house,” added twin sister Katie Sommer, who chipped in with 20 points. “We don't like to lose here.”
