Pickering powers Linn-Mar boys bowlers

IOWA CITY - Connor Pickering fired games of 213 and 234 for a 447 series that led Linn-Mar past Iowa City High, 2921-2611, Friday in boys bowling at Colonial Lanes.

Seth Tegtmeier, Colby Frye and Kaleb Foye also cracked the 400 series barrier for Linn-Mar.

Lions rout Kennedy and Senior on mat

No.4 Linn-Mar routed both Kennedy and Dubuque Senior Thursday in prep wrestling at Linn-Mar.

The Lions beat Kennedy, 62-15, and handled Senior, 71-12.

Linn-Mar had six pins against Kennedy and eight against Linn-Mar. Damon Griffin, Ross Lembeck, Shea Hartzler and Logan Hagmeier had a pair of pins apiece.

Mahmens having both knees replaced

Linn-Mar athletic director Scott Mahmens plans to have knee replacement surgery on both knees this month and will take a leave of absence from school until after the holiday break.

Mahmens was scheduled to have one of the operations Wednesday and is scheduled to have the other operation next week.

Mahmens said Tuesday night that both knees have been bothering him, but the operations are not due to any recent events.

   

Waukee too tall for Lions, 56-51

The Waukee Warriors strolled into the Linn-Mar gym Tuesday night with an imposing front line that stood 6-foot-10, 6-foot-8 and 6-foot-7, but the Lions simply got out their pea-shooters and began firing away.

The Lions almost chopped Waukee down to size, but the Warriors escaped with a 56-51 victory in the season opener for both teams before heading back into the fog for the trip home.

"I loved the way our guys competed. I thought we really battled," Linn-Mar Coach Chris Robertson remarked. "That's a tough matchup. We don't have anybody over 6-5.

"That's what I told them: Be disappointed with the result, but don't be disappointed with your effort."

Lions, Hawks ranked 4-5 in wrestling

The Linn-Mar Lions and Prairie Hawks, two traditional powers in high school wrestling, are ranked right next to each other in the first Class 3A poll of the season by The Predicament.

Linn-Mar is ranked No.4 and Prairie is ranked No.5, The Predicament announced Monday. Both teams will compete in the Independence tournament this Saturday.

Bettendorf is ranked No.1, followed by Southeast Polk and Waverly-Shell Rock.

Linn-Mar has two top-ranked wrestlers with Alijah Jeffery at 120 pounds and Ross Lembeck at 152.
