Decker helps Lions drink Valley titles

If you see a blue-eyed sophomore guzzling water at Linn-Mar High School some day, don't be alarmed.

It's just Amber Decker getting ready for another race.

Decker followed her routine perfectly Thursday and won the MVC Valley Division cross country title by more than nine seconds on a sunny day at Noelridge Park.

Josh Evans claimed the boys title by more than 10 seconds as Linn-Mar swept the individual and team championships.

Linn-Mar runners climb to No.1

The Linn-Mar boys cross country team has climbed to the No.1 ranking in Class 4A this week, the Iowa Track Coaches Association announced Wednesday night.

The Lions jumped from No.6 to No.1 after nipping Cedar Rapids Prairie for the Mississippi Valley Conference title last week. Prairie slipped one notch from No.2 to No.3.

Linn-Mar replaced Johnston at the top of the rankings. The Dragons fell one spot to second.

The Linn-Mar girls, who also claimed top honors at the MVC meet, are the highest-ranked conference team at No.6 in Class 4A this week. Kennedy is ranked eighth.

The Xavier boys are ranked No.5 in Class 3A. The Marion Indians are ranked 12th. The Xavier girls are ranked No.8.

Jenn wins battle of Jenks sisters

Freshman Jennifer Jenks and sophomore Stephanie Jenks have been members of the same relay teams at Linn-Mar this season, but Tuesday night the sisters swam against each other in a pair of individual events.

Jennifer topped Stephanie both times as the Lions defeated Cedar Rapids Washington, 129-56, in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet at Washington.

Jennifer nipped Stephanie in the 100 yard butterfly by a scant 2-hundredths of a second in a photo finish — 1:07.72 compared with 1:07.74. Jennifer also trimmed Stephanie in the 100 breaststroke by 1.72 seconds.

Jennifer Jenks also swam on the victorious 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay and was a four-time winner for Linn-Mar. Kelly Wingerson, Hailey Harms and Samantha Fitzgerald won three events for the Lions.

Stephanie Jenks and Paige Broghammer were double winners. Alyssa Deuso (diving) and Hannah Gardner (400 free relay) also won an event for Linn-Mar.

Logan Eckhardt (50 freestyle) and Kaitlyn Nemickas (100 backstroke) won events for Washington.

Noisy Lions push Dike-New Hartford

According to the Linn-Mar volleyball players, the louder they are the better they play.

“It's an energy thing,” said senior Kristie Sommer. “It seems like when we're talking more to each other more, we're a lot livelier.”

And on Saturday at Cedar Rapids Jefferson's Westside Volleyball Invitational, they were talking up a blue streak.

Seeded No.11 out of 21 teams in the field, the Lions advanced to a semifinals match with top seeded Dike-New Hartford.

Prairie Hawks clobber Lions, 63-17

The Cedar Rapids Prairie football team summed up its performance at John Wall Field Friday night with a six-word yell with Coach Mike Morrissey leading the way.

"We came! We saw! We conquered!"

Boy, did they ever.

The Hawks rolled up 615 yards of total offense and squashed the Linn-Mar Lions, 63-17, in a Mississippi Conference mismatch of epic proportions.
