Lions go 2-2 at Monticello

MONTICELLO - The Linn-Mar Lions compiled a 2-2 record at the Monticello volleyball tournament Saturday.

The Lions posted victories over Monticello (21-14, 21-9) and Bellevue Marquette (25-13, 25-16).

Linn-Mar's losses were to DeWitt Central (21-19, 12-21, 19-17) and Davenport Assumption (21-15, 15-21, 15-9).

Drake, Jenks break meet records

Cedar Rapids Jefferson freshman super swimmer Kelsey Drake is feeling the joy of being part of a high school team.

“It's like a family,” she says.

At the Kennedy Invitational meet on Saturday she shattered a pool record that had stood for 25 years.

Mere minutes later, however, she was at the water's edge for the third heat of the next race cheering on a teammate she's been friends with since kindergarten.

Tigers crush Lions on the ground, 56-28

CEDAR FALLS – Linn-Mar has run into its share of good football teams over the first five weeks.

The Lions have shown flashes of brilliance on offense, but have struggled on the defensive side.

That was the case again Friday night against Cedar Falls.

Linn-Mar gave up 589 yards to the Tigers, 449 of which came on the ground as Cedar Falls rebounded from an upset loss last week to Waterloo West with a 56-28 victory.

Rathje tops Metro runners in rankings

Linn-Mar senior Tanner Rathje leads all Metro cross country runners in the state rankings this week.

Rathje is ranked No.5 among Class 4A boys, according to the Iowa Track Coaches Association. Prairie senior Mitch Pritts, who was ranked No.1 last week, dropped to No.12 following a sub-par showing at the Heartland Classic in Ames Saturday.

Isaiah Vlasek of Prairie is ranked 10th, Jake Moore of Prairie is 14th, Daniel Murphy of Linn-Mar 17th, Tysen Van Draska of Prairie 19th and Michael Mather of Linn-Mar 26th.

Shannon Gorman of Washington leads Metro girls in the Class 4A rankings in the No.7 spot. Amber Decker of Linn-Mar is ranked ninth.

Linn-Mar swept by Iowa City West

IOWA CITY - The Linn-Mar Lions were swept by Iowa City West, 25-18, 25-19, 25-23, in a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match in Iowa City Tuesday night.

Aryn Jones and Meg Gostonczik had nine kills for Linn-Mar (12-8). Ellie Anderson collected 20 assists.

Kiley Coppock contributed 19 digs for the Lions and Sarah Renner had 16.
