Indians denied in Wamac finals

There were no tears for the Marion Indians following the championship match of the Wamac Conference volleyball tournament Tuesday night, just a fierce determination to beat powerful West Delaware if they happen to meet in the state tournament again this year.

The Indians had their chances Tuesday before losing a tight match to West Delaware, 25-23, 25-20, in the Wamac finals at Marion High School.

The first set was tied, 23-23, before the Hawks captured the last two points. And Marion owned a 17-12 lead in the second set before the Hawks rallied and took control.

The Indians know West Delaware has a terrific program, but they also know they're not far away from getting the job done. West Delaware nipped Marion, 3-2, in the semifinals of the Class 4A state tournament last year and nipped them again Tuesday in the league finals.

DUBUQUE – The Marion sideline wore the bruises and scars of football battle.

Many players wore warm-ups or street clothes and Tylor Fairbanks missed the final few minutes while being treated on a stretcher with a foot injury. The Indians' ace training staff rushed for more than 400 yards while tending to players.

On the coldest night of the roughest of seasons, the Indians were clearly beat up and beaten.

They started this chilly battle with Dubuque Wahlert missing 11 players. By the time the clock struck triple zeros on the Golden Eagles' commanding 35-8 victory at the Rock Bowl, Marion's list of walking wounded had grown to 19.
