Marion sweeps at Wamac volleyball

The third-ranked Marion Indians swept all three of their matches at the Wamac Conference volleyball tournament Thursday in pool play.

The Indians topped Williamsburg (21-12, 21-13), Anamosa (21-8, 21-5) and Dyersville Beckman (21-14, 21-12).

Western Dubuque, West Delaware and Mount Vernon also won their pools Thursday.

Isabella Sade and Olivia Frazier collected 16 kills for Marion in the three matches. Alyssa Thomas finished with 13 kills.

Caitlyn Smith collected 54 assists. Thomas and Kirsten Way served three aces. Haley Dullea had 14 digs, Way 12 and Tanea Westhoff 10.

Sade collected three blocks.

Bach leads Marion to Wamac title

INDEPENDENCE - Maddie Bach of Marion High School captured top honors at the Wamac Conference cross country meet Thursday and led the Indians to the team championship in Independence.

Bach, a senior, covered the 5K course in 18 minutes, 47 seconds. She defeated Julie Hollensbe of Williamsburg by 13 seconds.

Marion claimed the title with 84 points, edging Vinton-Shellsburg (92) and Mount Vernon-Lisbon (102). Hallie Kephart finished ninth for Marion.

Fopma takes 2nd at Wamac boys race

INDEPENDENCE - Jeremy Fopma of Marion placed second at the Wamac Conference cross country meet Thursday in Independence.

Reid Smock of Mount Vernon/Lisbon won the 5K race in 16 minutes, 14 seconds. Fopma, a sophomore, finished 14 seconds later in 16:28.

Mount Vernon/Lisbon won the team championship. Marion placed sixth out of 16 teams. Myles Fopma, one of Marion's top runners, did not compete in the conference meet.

No. 3 Marion rolls by Williamsburg

Caitlyn Smith rolled up 40 assists Tuesday night as the third-ranked Marion Indians spanked Williamsburg, 25-14, 25-15, 25-4, in a Wamac Conference volleyball match at Marion.

Alyssa Thomas led the kill-shot artists with 12 for the Indians. Isabella Sade had 11 kills and Olivia Frazier nine.

Haley Dullea finished with 14 digs for Marion. Alicia Steepleton and Sade blocked four shots. Frazier had three blocks.

 

Dralle, Walsh join 2,000-yard club

Kennedy's Tyler Dralle and Marion's Kory Walsh each cracked the 2,000-yard barrier in career rushing yards Friday and each hopes to climb the charts in the final two weeks of the high school football regular season.

Dralle now has 2,072 career rushing yards and Walsh has 2,049, ranking them 13th and 14th in Metro history according to Metro Sports Report records.

Andre Dawson of Washington holds the Metro record with a whopping 5,084 yards rushing from 2007-09.

Dralle has a chance to finish ninth on the career list with Kennedy headed to the Class 4A playoffs. Derek Kielkopf of Kennedy (1998-99) is currently ninth with 2,536, so Dralle needs 465 yards to pass him.

Dralle is the No. 2 rusher in Class 4A this season with 1,157 and his 13 touchdowns rank tied for fifth. Sam Cook of Fort Dodge is the 4A top rusher with 1,454 yards.

The Metro area has two 4A state leaders. Linn-Mar's Alexy Boehm is tied for tops with five field goals and Kennedy's Shaun Beyer is No. 1 in punting average at 44.5 yards per boot.

Austin Coates of Kennedy is tied for third with four interceptions. Daniel Gorsich of Linn-Mar is eighth with 36 pass receptions.

In Class 3A, Xavier quarterback Bryce Schulte is tied for fifth with 16 touchdown passes and eighth in yards with 1,168.
