Marion suffers 14th straight loss

The football gods continued to frown on the Marion Indians on Friday night.

The Indians lost to Maquoketa, 14-0, in a Class 3A district game at Thomas Park for their 14th straight loss over the past two years.

Kory Walsh rushed for 153 yards for Marion, giving the senior a total of 751 yards on 107 carries this year.

"Kory Walsh runs hard all the time," said Marion coach Tony Perkins, who appreciates the effort.

Walsh was impressed with Maquoketa's defense.

"They are a very physical team," he said. "They come out and smack you."

Metro teams jockey in volleyball poll

You could probably throw a blanket over the volleyball teams at Prairie, Kennedy and Linn-Mar and pick a different winner every day.

The new Class 5A rankings were released Thursday by the IGHSAU and it showed Prairie at No. 5, Kennedy at No. 6 and Linn-Mar at No. 7 heading into the final weeks of the regular season.

Marion continued to be ranked No. 2 in Class 4A.

Marion Hall of Fame gets new class

Marion High School will induct nine new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame Friday night prior to the school's football game against Maquoketa at Thomas Park Field.

The new inductees are Jacqueline Kane (Athlete 2008), Ben Messerli (Athlete 2006), Greg Morris (Athlete 1970), Dennis Oliphant (Athlete 1970), Todd Tharp (Administrator/Athlete 1983), Jim Roth (Community Member), Jerry and Suzanne Wikert (Community Member) and Tom Zrudsky (Coach).

   

VanDraska wins top prize at Muscatine

MUSCATINE - Tysen VanDraska claimed first place at the Muscatine Invitational cross country meet Tuesday and nearly led Cedar Rapids Prairie to the title.

Pleasant Valley and Prairie both finished with 40 points for their top-five runners, but Pleasant Valley won the tiebreaker on the basis of its sixth-place finisher.

VanDraska won the 5K race in 15 minutes, 56.5 seconds. Karson Sommer of Pleasant Valley placed second in 16:02.

Prairie had four runners in the top seven. Jake Moore was fifth, Cam Steffens sixth and Chris Oehlert seventh.

Reagan Gorman of Cedar Rapids Washington finished fourth in the girls race in 18:59.2. Maddie Bach of Marion placed fifth in 19:14.2.

No. 2 Indians rally by No. 12 Indee

INDEPENDENCE - The second-ranked Marion Indians got stronger as the match went along Tuesday night and defeated 12th-ranked Independence, 20-25, 25-21, 25-10, 25-13, in a battle of Wamac Conference powers at Independence.

Isabella Sade led Marion with 19 kills and four blocks. Caitlyn Smith provided 32 assists and 10 digs.

Morgan Swanger had nine kills and Olivia Frazier had eight. Tanea Westhoff furnished 18 digs. Kenzie Redmond had 13 digs and four aces. Haley Dullea contributed six digs.

Both teams compete in Class 4A.
