Marion selling state basketball tickets

Marion High School will be selling tickets for their game against Harlan in the first round of the girls Class 4A state basketball tournament next week in Des Moines.

Tipoff is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. Wednesday at Wells Fargo Arena.

Tickets cost $10. Make checks payable to Marion High School.

Tickets can be purchased at the main office at Marion from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Monday and from 7 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

Tickets can also be purchased before the game at the arena.

 

Rice, Laube lead All-Wamac hoops

Chloe Rice and Mia Laube, a pair of talented sophomores who have led the Marion Indians to the Class 4A state basketball tournament, have been named unanimous selections on the Wamac Conference West Division all-star team.

Marion sophomore Caitlyn Smith was named to the second team. Freshman Maddie Knapp and junior Isabella Sade received honorable mention.

Corby Laube of Marion was named the West Division Coach of the Year.

Marion girls make 4A state tourney

ELDRIDGE – Caitlyn Smith scored 18 points to lead the seventh-ranked Marion girls basketball team to a 48-40 win over No. 6 North Scott in a Class 4A regional final Tuesday at North Scott.

Smith popped in four 3-pointers for the young Indians.

Marion (19-4) will face third-ranked Harlan (20-2) in a state tournament quarterfinal game at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, March 2 in Des Moines.

Chloe Rice added 11 points for Marion.

Olivia Schmidt scored 15 points to lead North Scott, which finished 18-5.

MARION (48): Knapp 0 1-2 1, Rice 5 1-1 11, Smith 5 4-5 18, Wright 2 0-0 6, Laube 2 0-2 4, Willette 2 0-0 5, Herold 0 1-2 1, Sade 1 0-0 2, Jordan 0 0-0 0. Totals 17 7-12 48.

Smith leads Marion to 3rd at state

DES MOINES – Bre Smith turned in a big performance Tuesday to help the Marion Indians finish third at the Class 2A state bowling tournament at Plaza Lanes in Des Moines.

Smith rolled games of 247 and 235 to finish with a 482 series, good for second place in the individual standings. Leah Frost of Waterloo East had games of 290 and 210 for a 500 series.

Marion finished with a score of 2,777. Waterloo East won the tournament with 3,071 pins and Ottumwa was second with 2,863.

Jacob Fulton of Xavier finished in a tie for 18th place as an individual qualifier in the Class 2A boys tournament, shooting a 204 game and a 375 series.

Tanya Zaugg of Xavier finished 25th in the girls standings with games of 187 and 157 for a 344 series.

Rally ends Marion's season in OT

DUBUQUE - Kyle Wright scored 15 points and Ryan Trainer added 13 as West Delaware rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to down Marion, 55-47, in a Class 3A district contest Monday night at Wahlert High School.

Jacob Manderscheid scored 14 and Baylor Fish added 11 for the Indians, who close their season at 9-13.

West Delaware (16-6) made only 15 field goals, but six came from beyond the 3-point line, compared to just three treys for Marion.

MARION (47): Fish 2 7-7 11, Zielke 1 4-4 6, Walter 2 0-0 5, Manderscheid 4 6-6 14, Mohwinkle 2 0-1 6, Wiese 2 1-4 5. Totals 13 18-22 47.

WEST DELAWARE (55): Trainer 2 8-8 13, Kelley 1 0-2 2, McCarty 2 0-0 6, Wright 4 4-5 15, Krogman 3 3-4 9, Monaghan 0 0-0 0, Nagel 3 4-4 10. Totals: 15 19-26 55.
