Marion High School - Marion, Iowa

Washington Demons too tough for Marion

Warning to all future opponents of the Washington Demons: Don't make them angry. You won't like them when they're angry.

Embarrassed and fighting mad after a humiliating season-opening shutout loss to Pella, the 2013 Class 3A state runner-up took out its frustrations Friday night on an offensively flat, butterfingers Marion team that stumbled badly in Week 2 of its daunting 2014 “Schedule of Death” slate.

Defensive end Thomas Bump, the face of the Demons' aggression, forced three fumbles and quarterback Daryn Sebelius threw two touchdowns, ran for two scores and sealed the game late as the Demons overwhelmed the Indians, 35-25, at Thomas Park Field.

Washington's fiery response denied Marion Coach Tony Perkins an opportunity to tie Les Hipple for most career wins at the school.

Murphy runs away at Prairie Invy

The last time Daniel Murphy ran in a high school cross country race, he collapsed at the Class 4A state meet in Fort Dodge and ended up in a hospital.

Saturday was much, much better.

Murphy ran away with top honors at the 30th Prairie Invitational and shattered the meet record in 15 minutes, 26 seconds for the 5K course.

The Linn-Mar senior beat Tysen VanDraska of Prairie by 11 seconds in the field of 17 schools and 119 individuals.

"I was not expecting that, honestly," Murphy said after his convincing victory. "Me and Tysen were battling a lot. I'm going to take it. It's a P.R. (personal record)."

Murphy was one of the top runners for the Linn-Mar varsity last year as a junior, but he suffered from dehydration and perhaps a virus at the state meet and finished 115th and last in 19 minutes, 43 seconds.

Marion handles Mt Vernon in opener

MOUNT VERNON – Diving headfirst into the “Schedule of Death,” the Marion Indians swam in their 2014 season opener.

In Game 1 of a slate that offers no off-weeks, Marion rode its new-look offensive attack to a mud-ugly but hard-earned 28-6 victory over a game Mount Vernon team.

Kory Walsh ran for two touchdowns, new starting quarterback Hayden Meister connected with Derek Smith on a 38-yard touchdown strike and the late-awakening Indians took control of the game in the third quarter to score an opening-night win that was as pretty as an offensive line trying to perform a ballet routine.

“That was the definition of winning ugly,” Indians Coach Tony Perkins said.

In a fitting image of just how daunting Marion's 2014 season figures to be, the sky opened wide with three minutes left in the third quarter, forcing the Indians to put the game away in the pouring rain.
