Indians sweep Vinton in softball

VINTON - Alicia Steepleton picked up the victory in both games Monday as the Marion Indians swept a Wamac Conference doubleheader from Vinton-Shellsburg, 6-2 and 7-6, in Vinton.

Steepleton tossed a one-hitter with eight strikeouts in the 6-2 victory. Madison Wilson went 4-for-4 for the Indians with two RBIs. Haley Blazek was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Steepleton pitched the final four innings in relief in the nightcap and got the victory when Marion rallied to the 7-6 triumph. She allowed one run on three hits.

Haley Vanourney went 3-for-3 with two RBIs in the second game for Marion. Bayley Fuller and Marissa Whitney also had two RBIs. Haley Blazek hit a solo home run.

Steepleton tosses 1-hitter for Marion

CENTRAL CITY - Alicia Steepleton pitched a one-hitter with six strikeouts Saturday as the Marion Indians blanked Central City, 11-0, at the Central City softball tournament.

Marion trimmed Midland, 6-5, and edged Clayton-Ridge, 4-3, to finish with a perfect 3-0 record at the tournament.

Haley Vanourney and Mahlia Brown went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs for Marion against Central City. Bayley Fuller also had two RBIs. Brown hit two doubles.

Camryn Cannoy pitched a complete game to get the victory against Midland. Haley Dullea, Vanourney, Brown and Madison Wilson had RBIs for the Indians.

Steepleton pitched her second complete game in the tournament against Clayton Ridge. Wilson went 2-for-2 in the contest. Dullea and Wilson had RBIs.

Linn-Mar tops Marion in softball

Maddy Ryan pitched a six-hit shutout Friday night as Linn-Mar defeated Marion, 5-0, in a girls softball game at the Linn-Mar field.

Christina Lincoln went 2-for-3 and collected an RBI for the Lions. Ryan had a triple and two RBIs. Katie Sommer went 2-for-4.

Ryan raised her record to 3-0.

Marion boys booted by Assumption

Davenport Assumption scored with three minutes left in the game Thursday night to snap a 1-1 tie and nudge Marion, 2-1, in the semifinals of the Class 2A substate boys soccer tournament in Marion.

Neither team scored in the first half. Assumption, ranked No. 16, scored first in the second half for a 1-0 lead.

Enoch Duval scored for Marion with six minutes left to tie the contest, but the visitors got the game-winner and ended Marion's campaign.

 

Johnston, Waverly top boys soccer polls

Everybody will be chasing Johnston and Waverly-Shell Rock in the boys postseason soccer tournaments.

Johnston is the unanimous No. 1 pick in Class 3A and Waverly-Shell Rock was voted No. 1 in Class 2A in the final poll of the season by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.

Five Metro teams are ranked again this week.

Linn-Mar is No. 4 in Class 3A, Washington No. 5 and Kennedy No. 6. Xavier is ranked No. 4 in Class 2A and Marion No. 14.
