Marion girls top Maquoketa again

CAMANCHE - The Marion Indians trimmed Maquoketa, 5-4, in the opening round of the Class 1A girls regional tennis tournament Saturday in Camanche.

It was the third time in one week that Marion nudged Maquoketa by the same score. This contest took 4 1/2 hours to complete.

The Indians lost to Camanche, 5-0, in the semifinals Saturday and were eliminated from the tournament.

Madison Wilson won her match at No.1 singles for Marion against Maquoketa in a tiebreaker.

Kelly leads Marion at sectional golf

Ian Kelly shot an 81 Friday to lead the Marion Indians at the Class 3A sectional tournament at Gardner Golf Course.

Kelly placed ninth in the individual standings. Jeremy Schnieders of Marion finished one shot behind his teammate.

Zach Buch of Williamsburg led his team to the sectional title by claimingmedalist honors with a 75. Williamsburg and DeWitt Central advanced to the district tournament.

No.13 Indians spank Anamosa

Enoch Duval collected three goals Friday as the Class 2A 13th-ranked Marion Indians blanked Anamosa, 5-0, in a Wamac Conference soccer match at Thomas Park.

Daniel Tribble and Noah Walter also scored for the Indians. Tribble, Carter Stigge, Brandon See and Matthew Minks had assists.

Marion raised its record to 9-2.

Indians, Saints win 7 titles

The Marion and Xavier boys track teams combined to capture seven events at the Class 3A state qualifier at Thomas Park Thursday.

Jordan Garthwaite won the 400 meter dash, Colton Forster claimed the 3200 meter run and Devin Quinn took the high jump as the Marion Indians placed third in the team standings. The Indians also won the 4x800 meter relay with Jacob Manderscheid, Austin Yirkovsky, Garthwaite and Trevor Hardman.

Nick Stark was a double-winner for Xavier in the 100 meter dash and long jump as the Saints placed fourth in the team standings. Xavier also claimed the 4x400 relay with Josh Gerke, Joe Welch, Evan Gradoville and Noah Clasen.

Marion girls sink Maquoketa, 1-0

The Marion Indians blanked Maquoketa, 1-0, in a Wamac Conference girls soccer match Thursday in pouring rain.

Amanda Sahm scored the only goal in the soggy contest. Abby Phillips made nine saves for the shutout.

Maddie Chambers, Sheala Rael and Saige Trca "were outstanding" in the total team victory, according to Coach Erik Trilk.
