Marion girls win relay at Wamac meet

MOUNT VERNON —  The Marion Indians captured the distance medley at the Wamac Conference indoor track meet Saturday at Cornell College.

Skylar Miller, Gloria Coder, Sam Livingstone and Sydney Brase passed the baton in 4 minutes, 43 seconds for first place.

Avery Graves placed second in the 55 meter dash (8.02 seconds), and she placed third in the 200 (29.23) for the Indians.

The Marion boys finished second in three events. Colton Forster was second in the 1600 (4:57.13), Quinn Cannoy was the runner-up in the 55 hurdles (8.11) and the 4x800 relay also placed second (8:53.04).

No team scores were kept.

Carter tops all-Metro basketball team

Kennedy senior A.J. Carter has been named the Athlete of the Year on the 2014 All-Metro Boys Basketball Team, as selected by the Metro coaches.

Jon McKowen of Kennedy was named the Metro Coach of the Year in his first season with the Cougars.

Jacob Olson of Jefferson, Adam McDermott of Xavier, Jordan Bohannon of Linn-Mar, Michael Mims of Prairie, Jared Printy of Washington and Nic Uhlir of Linn-Mar joined Carter on the first team.

Quinn, Engle make all-Wamac squad

Daly Quinn of Marion High School has been named to the first team on the Wamac Conference all-star basketball squad this season.

Craig Engle of Marion was named to the second team.

Quinn Cannoy and Trevor Hardman received Honorable Mention for the Indians.

   

Cannoy, Quinn win titles at Wartburg track

WAVERLY - Quinn Cannoy won the 55 meter hurdles and DeShaun Quinn captured the long jump for the Marion Indians at the Wartburg College indoor track meet Tuesday in Waverly.

Cannoy took the hurdles in 7.84 seconds. Quinn won the long jump at 20 feet, 1 3/4 inches.

Austin Yirkovsky placed second in the 800 meter run in 2:11.77 for the Indians. Brad Willimack finished fifth in the 200 (57.59), Colton Forster was fifth in the 3200 (10:38.84), Dalton Gardner was sixth in the 200 (58.02), Devin Quinn tied for sixth in the high jump (1.78 meters) and Derek Smith also tied for sixth in the high jump (1.78 meters).

Saints top Indians; No.1 Wahlert next

The Xavier boys had all they could handle Thursday night with a scrappy Marion squad to make it to next week's substate final.

What the underdog

Indians (10-13) lacked in size they made up for in heart and hustle.

The Saints (15-8) prevailed, 62-49, in the Linn-Mar gym and get to face Class 3A top-ranked Dubuque Wahlert (17-3) next Monday at Epworth for a state tournament berth.
