Marion High School - Marion, Iowa

Lamm will bowl at Mount Mercy

Marion High School senior Taylor Lamm has accepted an offer to join the Mount Mercy University women's bowling team next season.

Lamm has posted a high series of 677 and a high game of 261 during her career. She has been bowling for nearly 12 years and has performed for the Marion varsity since she was a freshman.

Lamm plans to major in education, with an emphasis in English and a minor in creative writing.

Lamm will sign her letter-of-intent on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in the MISD Board Room at the high school.

Laube has young squad with Marion girls

Corby Laube helps coach both of his daughters' AAU youth basketball teams and also coaches his son's fourth grade team, so he's accustomed to working with young players.

That's good, because he also coaches the Marion High School girls basketball team and there's not a single 12th grader on the club.

There could have been two seniors this year, but Emi Banes tore her ACL last summer and has been lost for the season and another senior elected not to play.

Marion knocks, Assumption answers

TIPTON - No. 10 Marion will have to keep knocking at the door for another year. No. 7 Davenport Assumption showed the Indians how to knock it down, winning 25-22, 25-23, 25-21 Tuesday in a Class 4A regional final.

Assumption (31-6) faces No. 3 West Delaware (36-5) in the 4A state quarterfinal on Tuesday at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.

The Knights take a senior-dominated team to the state tournament.

It was that senior lineup that never panicked in tight finishes to all three sets.

Thomas helps Marion make regional finals

Alyssa Thomas remembers sitting in the stands at the U.S. Cellular Center and watching her sister Brittney help the Marion Indians win the Class 3A state volleyball title.

That was back in 2008, when Alyssa was in the fifth grade.

"I remember being a little person and cheering on TV and looking really stupid," she said Thursday night, laughing. "I just remember watching my sister play. How scared she was and nervous.

"I want to feel that nervousness, too. I love being nervous for volleyball. It's the best feeling."

Thomas helped Marion get a step closer Thursday with a strong performance as the Indians swept Davenport North, 25-17, 25-18, 25-12, in the Class 4A regional semifinals at Marion.
