Clifton, Conway lead Marion wrestlers

ANAMOSA - Trey Clifton and Colin Conway won both of their matches Thursday night as the Marion Indians split a pair of Wamac Conference wrestling meets in Anamosa.

The Indians topped Anamosa, 46-24, and were trimmed by Vinton-Shellsburg, 37-36.

Clifton collected two pins at 138 pins and Conway had two pins at 152.

Kennedy girls climb to No. 1 in poll

The Cedar Rapids Kennedy girls basketball team has followed its 13-game winning streak all the way to the top of the Class 5A rankings this week.

The Cougars climbed from No. 2 to No. 1 in the latest poll released Thursday by the IGHSAU. The Johnston Dragons, who were ranked No. 1 last week, fell all the way to No. 5 with an 8-3 record.

Kennedy (13-1) has won 13 straight games since losing its season opener at Waukee. Indianola is second in the Class 5A rankings, followed by Ankeny Centennial, Waukee and Johnston.

Kennedy hosts Jefferson at 6 p.m. Friday in the first game of a girl/boy doubleheader with the J-Hawks.

The Linn-Mar Lions (8-3) dropped one spot to No. 12 in Class 5A this week.

Rice sparks No. 6 Marion girls

Chloe Rice scored 21 points to lead the sixth-ranked Marion girls basketball team in a 59-41 win over South Tama in a Wamac Conference game Tuesday at Marion.

Mia Laube added 10 points for the Indians (8-4), who led 10-0 early and 23-10 at the end of the first quarter.

Dani Stubbs scored 12 points for South Tama (6-7).

Manderscheid sparks Marion by Tama

TAMA – Jacob Manderscheid scored 23 points, shooting 10-of-10 from the free-throw line, to lead the Marion boys basketball team in a 54-41 Wamac win over South Tama on Tuesday.

The Indians trailed 25-23 midway through the third quarter, but they pulled away in the fourth quarter and improved to 4-7.

Baylor Fish added 10 points for Marion.

Clayton Rosenberger scored 18 points for South Tama (2-10) and Triston Lasley added 14 points.

Marion boys trimmed by Vinton

VINTON - Vinton-Shellsburg scored the last three points of the game Friday night to snap a 43-43 tie and trim Marion, 46-43, in a Wamac Conference boys basketball game in Vinton.

Tyler Stueck led Vinton-Shellsburg (8-3) with 14 points. Austin Bohnsack had 12 points for the winners.

Noah Walter scored 10 points for Marion (3-7). Baylor Fish and Jacob Manderscheid had nine points apiece.
