Marion High School - Marion, Iowa

Marion tailback Mowry has knee injury

Marion High School tailback Colton Mowry did not play against Decorah Friday night due to a sprained MCL, according to Coach Tony Perkins.

Mowry carried the ball 18 times for 162 yards and two touchdowns in a 40-0 victory over Mount Pleasant in the first game of the season, but suffered the injury during that contest. He will be sidelined for an indefinite period of time.

Mowry is a 5-foot-9, 185-pound senior.

The Indians lost to Decorah, 34-7.

No.7 Decorah dumps Marion, 34-7

DECORAH - A 32-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Trevor Hardman to Quinn Cannoy was the lone scoring offense mustered by the Marion football team Friday night as the Indians fell to Class 3A No.7 Decorah, 34-7, in Decorah.

The Vikings (2-0) won their 16th straight game, the second longest winning streak in the state.

Decorah, which last year won the Class 3A title, took the opening kickoff 50 yards to set up shop on a short field. They scored less than three minutes into the game, taking a 6-0 lead.

Perkins reaches 100 wins at Marion

Marion High School football coach Tony Perkins won his 100th game at the school Friday night when the Indians blanked Mount Pleasant, 40-0, in the season opener at Thomas Park.

Perkins, 51, has compiled a 100-37 record in 14 years at Marion. He has won six district titles and made the playoffs eight times, the most in school history.

"It is a great honor to coach long enough to reach 100 games, but it is the athletes and coaches I have worked with that made it special," said Perkins. "The credit goes to all of those quality young men and coaches."

Perkins has an overall record of 155-83 in 25 years as a head coach at CAL Community High School (three years), MOC-Floyd Valley (eight years) and Marion.

Defense shines as Marion stuffs Mount Pleasant

If the Decorah Vikings sent a spy to Thomas Park Friday to get the scoop on Marion's new spread passing attack, he undoubtedly went home with an empty notebook.

The Marion Indians stuck to the basics and squashed Mount Pleasant, 40-0, in a non-district game to open the 2013 football campaign.

Coach Tony Perkins wants to throw the ball this season, but the Indians rushed the ball 48 times for 328 yards and threw only nine times against the out-matched Panthers.

"All in all," Perkins said philosophically, "you go back to what you do best."
