Marion rallies to advance in tourney

Marion won the last two sets and bounced back to beat Western Dubuque in five sets Monday night in a Class 4A regional volleyball first round match at Marion.

The Indians (26-13) advance and will host Dubuque Wahlert on Thursday night at 7.

Marion lost the first set against Western Dubuque 29-27, but bounced back to take the second 25-21.

Marion stumbles into playoffs with 17-16 loss

DEWITT - The Marion Indians won their district title and claimed a No. 1 seed for the Class 3A playoffs Friday night, but they didn't feel like winners.

They didn't play like winners, either.

Marion squandered a nine-point lead in the second half and lost to DeWitt Central, 17-16, in the final game of the regular season at DeWitt.

The Indians would have captured an outright division title with a victory. Instead, they finished in a three-way tie for the District 6 crown and won the No. 1 seed on a tiebreaker.

Marion (7-2) will host Western Dubuque (4-5) in the opening round of the playoffs Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Thomas Park.

Rethwisch qualifies for 3A state meet

CENTER JUNCTION - The Xavier boys cross country team and Marion's Peter Rethwisch claimed spots in next week's Class 3A state meet during Thursday's state qualifier at Jones Park in Center Junction.

The top three teams and top 10 individuals qualified for the state meet, which will be held Sat., Oct. 27, at Kennedy Park in Fort Dodge.

The Xavier boys finished second in a tight three-way race. Mount Vernon-Lisbon was first with 59 points, followed by Xavier with 68 and Fort Madison with 69. Marion was a distant fourth with 121 points.

4 Indians make all-Wamac volleyball

Four players from Marion High School have been named to the all-Wamac Conference volleyball team.

Sophomores Abby Phillips and Amanda Sahm were named first team all-conference. Senior Jessica Thomas and freshman Alyssa Thomas were named second team all-conference.

The four Indians were named to the West Division team.

 

Indians still 8th in Register poll

The Xavier Saints climbed one spot to third in the Des Moines Register Class 4A football rankings on Sunday.

The Saints (8-0) defeated then-No. 2 Cedar Falls, 24-7, Friday night at the UNI-Dome. Cedar Falls (7-1) fell to ninth this week.

Xavier hosts Linn-Mar Friday night.

The Marion Indians stayed in the No. 8 spot in the Class 3A rankings after blanking Clear Creek Amana, 27-0, on Friday. The Indians (7-1) visit DeWitt Central this Friday.
